What’s a drama do you hate that everyone else seems to love?

I have a lot of these. To name a few: Boys Over Flowers, The Heirs, The Moon that Embraces the Sun, Playful Kiss, You’re Beautiful.. etc. Apart from The Moon that Embraces the Sun and the Heirs, I watched the other dramas quite early on as they were supposed to be ‘classics’. I just couldn’t relate to the female characters - they weren’t strong or independent imo. The male leads were usually so horrible, I didn’t understand why anyone would fall for them. I was left with the terrible second lead syndrome and had to force myself to complete these shows.

Also Goblin - I just watched it for the second couple and skipped most scenes of the lead couple.

What drama do you love but everyone else seem to hate?

I’m not sure I have any dramas that fit in this category. Maybe some Wilber Pan (older Taiwanese dramas) that aren’t talked about - Endless Love, Miss No Good. I’m not sure if they are hated, but I know they aren’t very popular.

Who is the most unfairly maligned idol actor you would defend to your dying breath?

IU - she is so adorable. How can anyone dislike her. She is also a decent actor - I think she did a great job in Moon Lovers. I’ve watched her since Dream High so yeah.

What’s do you consider the most important fact for your drama watching enjoyment: a unique/interesting premise, good pacing, a satisfying ending? (You can only pick one.)

I watch a lot of airing dramas, so satisfying endings are hard to consider (these days there are few dramas with satisfying endings *cough*CITT/Ms Perfect*cough*). So probably the unique/interesting premise (consistent throughout the show). There are plenty of dramas that have such interesting storylines/premise and meet the potential in the first few episodes, and then half way through we take a U-turn and enter the land of trucks of doom/amnesia/pity party etc. It’s like the writer forgot the initial plot or the USP (CITT - always bitter).

Is there a show you watched toward the beginning of your kdrama career and you opinion has since changed drastically for better or worse since then?

For some reason, I really like Hana Kimi when I watched it and went on to watch all other remakes (Jap/Korean). Come to think of it, I don’t know what I liked so much about it. Wouldn’t be able to sit through an episode anymore (To the beautiful you was so painful to watch, with all the terrible acting).

When would you say kdramas became a regular part of your life?

Hmm probably 2010? I started off watching Taiwanese dramas, and then ran out of ‘good’ ones to watch (also finding eng subtitles became difficult) thus moved on to Kdramas. Now it’s become a way to relax, plus I skip so much an episode only takes 15/20 mins for me to watch sometimes.

Which common kdrama romantic convention have you seen a million times but you still can’t get enough of it? (Tying shoes, drunken piggyback rides, umbrellas, buying medicine for the love interest, first snow kisses/confessions, etc.)

It’s hard to pick. I think confessions? The other things happen in the same fashion in most dramas - so predictable (still cute and fluffy), however, I think confessions can be so unique to the characters of that drama. I eagerly wait to see how a character will confess, will it be in line with their character or not? - but I also have the worst memory so I can never remember these things. 

Which common kdrama convention do other people go gaga for but you just don’t get?

Not sure if this counts, but I don’t understand the craziness over the tsundere male lead. This guy is a jerk 80% of the time, why would you even fall for him? It’s the ‘falling for the bad guy’ thing I just don’t get. It’s like the female leads are looking for a challenge - to turn this jerk into a nice guy. If they look around, there are usually nice guys around (second leads). I get it when it’s a male lead who is overly reserved or just doesn’t like you because of misunderstandings, but I don’t understand the ones who are jerks for no reason.

Which actor do you avoid like the plague?

Yoona, Sulli - I’m not a fan of their acting and liking the lead female character makes or breaks a show for me.

Is there a particular writer’s body of work you find yourself drawn to? Who and why?
