Burrowing owls are the only owls to nest in underground burrows, made by small mammals or themselves, if none of the former are available. When threatened, they retreat into these burrows and imitate the sound of a rattlesnake to scare off intruders.

The crested owl is the only species in the genus Lophostrix. Its range is Central America and northern South America. Sometimes its call can be mistaken for those of frogs.

The long-eared owl is the type species for the genus Asio. Unlike most owls, it doesn't have a strong attachment to a territory. It can be found throughout most of the subarctic Northern Hemisphere.

The maned owl is the only member of the genus Jubula. Little is known about it, aside from the fact that it is endemic to Africa, because it is seldom seen and its distribution is scattered.
