The European Commission has published a proposal this afternoon for new legisaltion that would commit member states to open registers on the beneficial ownership of companies and to maintaining registers of trusts to which access would be available if they undertook ‘business like’ activities and the enquirer could show they had a reasonable cause for wanting data (with campaigning NGOs seemingly included in that brief).

So we have good news on one hand.

I'd much rather keep it physical...

Physical copies of music that is. If there's one thing that the computer and entertainment industry has tried to convince me lately is that the CD is a dead format. And while there are the vinyl enthusiasts who still cling to their format because of the difference in quality, the CD represents a much larger divide in how we view our music. It is a stark contrast of our perception of music as possessions: as physical entities we can hold and cherish or digital copies that are so easily disposable they can fade away in the blink of an eye. I'm apart of a generation who has lost the value of the physical copy: of holding something in your hand and studying it carefully, of being able to say, "this is the Eric's Trip album I really like, right here in my hands," of being able to share a CD with someone else to make a musical connection with them. It's obvious the trend music is taking, and as long as streaming music or downloading is more convenient it's obvious what direction the CD is going. I may be apart of a minority who still clings to the old format, but I'm really an advocate for something much more fundamental: genuine ownership. I want my music to have value. I want my music to be ever lasting. I want the physical copy.
