Another shot of this gorgeous major male Ox Beetle I met, Strategus antaeus 🐞♥🐞 _ He is one of over 30 insects we've recently rescued from a parking lot at night and released elsewhere away from certain death. This guy was released on our own property along with a lot of females nearby. Hoping to see more generations in the future! _ Genus Strategus (Ox Beetles) Species antaeus (Strategus antaeus) Other Common Names - Ox Beetle Size - 18-41 mm Range - TX-FL-MA-KS (most records along coastal plains from LA to MA) Habitat - Typically sandy areas, e.g. coastal plains Season - mostly: Jun-Sept (BG data) Food - Adults said to be chafers, feeding on grasses, leaves, fruits. Field journal Field journal 📔 ID: Strategus antaeus Common name: Smooth ox beetle (type of rhinoceros beetle) 🪲 I always love finding big beetles on my nature adventures, so I was thrilled to find my first rhinoceros beetle in the wild recently! 🔎 Just like rhinos, the male rhino beetles have horns and the females don’t. 🦏 These smooth ox beetles like pine forests but the ones pictured were in a scrub habitat (which was previously a sand pine forest prior to scrub restoration efforts). 🌲 Since these beetles are harmless to humans, I picked one up to feel how dense it was. Yesterday we lost our Ox beetle, Rufus 😞 My dad rescued him from getting run over at Home Depot back in July and he's been with us ever since. He was a fun little pet to have and our first beetle pet ever. Sadly, bugs don't live long. #bugmom #oxbeetle
