A chat with HUGO CHIARELLA
One of the OzMade Flashbacks you'll see highlighted on Monday night is DREAMSONG - a musical that has caused quite a stir since it was first performed at VCA. We're thrilled to welcome SAM LUDEMAN back to the Magnormos stage after his success on THE VOICE to perform the number, and we sat down with one of the writers HUGO CHIARELLA to get some insight into the show:
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT DREAMSONG? HUGO: DreamSong is a musical satire about a megachurch that fake the second coming of Jesus. It is irreverent, sacrilegious and lots of fun! HOW DID DREAMSONG COME ABOUT? HUGO: I had been tinkering away with the idea for a couple of years and slowly coming to the conclusion that I was much more comfortable with words than I was with music. Rob and I started writing songs together at university and I soon realised that he had the perfect ear for the style I was trying to achieve. From that point on the writing came together very quickly and we've been working together on this show in some capacity ever since. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE SONG THAT WE'RE GOING TO HEAR AT OZMADE MUSICALS 2012? HUGO: "Just Have Faith" is performed by the fake Jesus the first time he is revealed to the public. We wanted to write a song for this moment that worked on two levels. On the one hand it has to be a stirring pop anthem that we as the audience can believe the congregation of DreamSong would be swept up by. On the other hand it needs to encapsulate the false promise of the prosperity gospel. And so we get the main lyrical motif, "You can have it all if you believe", a banal pop platitude and at the same time an indictment of a religion appealing to greed. You can catch DREAMSONG at OzMade Musicals 2012 on Monday August 27th 8pm at the Comedy Theatre Melbourne. A quick chat with Matthew Robinson
In the midst of many different projects, including the debut of his musical HAPPY PEOPLE on the OzMade stage, Matthew Robinson finds some time to give us some insight into his new musical:
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT HAPPY PEOPLE? MATTHEW: HAPPY PEOPLE tells the onstage/offstage life of a famed children's television performing group. They're in their 10th anniversary year and chaos ensues. WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM TO WRITE IT? MATTHEW: I was watching one of these shows on TV one morning and suddenly became consumed with what that actor must really be thinking. HOW HAS THE EXPERIENCE BEEN WATCHING YOUR SHOW GET BROUGHT TO LIFE IN REHEARSAL? MATTHEW:This is the first staging ever of any part of this piece and everything is starting to make sense. You know, really thicken out. Moreover, I realised that I really love watching this show!
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AT OZMADE MUSICALS 2012? MATTHEW:Sharing the lives of these characters, staged for the first time. They're hilarious, touching and real!
You can catch HAPPY PEOPLE at OzMade Musicals 2012 on Monday August 27th 8pm at the Comedy Theatre Melbourne.
