The Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star was the first American jet-powered aircraft to be built in large numbers and was the first true operational jet fighter. These aircraft, assigned to the 94th Fighter Squadron, Jet Propelled, were part of a group of thirty-one specially modified P-80Bs (of a total of 240 built) that featured canopy defrosting and used special greases and natural rubber for service in Alaska. The aircraft also carried high visibility orange markings for easier spotting from the air in case of a crash landing. Formed as the 94th Aero Squadron in August 1917, and known as the Hat In the Ring Gang, the 94th is the second oldest squadron in the US Air Force. Today, the 94th FS, based at JB Langley-Eustis, Virginia, flies the F-22 Raptor.
