Cold.
That was the first thing Skylar felt as she came to, her head reeling as she shifted in her—no. These weren’t sheets around her, it felt slick and damp, slimy. Soft. Eyes opening, she blinked as she stared down at the matted, worn out pelt that covered her naked body. Skylar glanced down at her arms for a moment, the mottled array of scabs that had appeared on her body from weeks and weeks of refusing to turn now nothing more than light scars, barely visible against her skin. Her bones, her muscles, they felt… not good. Nothing really felt good to her anymore, not anymore. But, the ache that usually filled her was gone. As Skylar stared at herself, she tried to sort out the muddled memories that trickled in through her mind. Shivering under her skin, Skylar wrapped it around herself and stared at the dark surroundings about her for the first time.
She remembered Leah and Morgan and Erin barging into her house. She remembered them talking to her, them telling her all these things that weren’t true. They had said all those words, said that she deserved better, that she should try. But, she was tired of trying. She’d been trying for so long and what did she have to show for it? Nothing. All the people she’d cared were gone. Her parents. Her siblings. Winston. Nic. Remmy. Even her biological father, he was gone too. They’d met for a few fleeting weeks and then he was gone for good, never to be seen again. But, he’d never even really been here, had he? He was dead. Been dead, even before she knew what she was. Swallowing, Skylar shook her head and continued to sort through her mind.
She’d… forced them to leave her house. She’d pushed them away and immediately called Gabe, offered him bottles of her tears in exchange for—Skylar ran a hand through her hair, chewing on the inside of her cheek. She couldn’t remember. Bliss, blue mushrooms, a strange cigarette and even stranger pills. She had gone home and then... A blank. She couldn’t remember. No matter how hard she tried to remember, nothing returned. She remembered a blur of lights, with the briefest of snippets here and there. But, when she tried to reach out and grasp the memories, they slid past like water trickling through her outstretched fingers.
Shivering, Skylar stared down at herself and at the worn pelt that covered her. Did she even want to remember? Whatever had happened, it was… fine now. She was fine. And all she really wanted to do right now was go home and curl up in bed. Standing up on shaky legs, a sharp stab of pain ran up the side of her body, making her wince. She grasped her side, pressing against it with a grimace as she padded out of the cove and towards the darkened beach. Her hands felt slick and—Skylar glanced down at her hand and let out a sharp gasp.
Blood.
Fingers pressing against her side, Skylar was dimly aware that there was a large gash across her ribs, the edges of the wound crusted with blood. She hadn’t even felt it, hadn’t even… realized. It still didn’t even feel real. Everything was muted, dull. It was just the way her life had been for these past few months. Leaning against the edge of the cave, Skylar stared out at the sea, hands still holding her side.
What had she done?
