Lucy knocked on the door to her cousin’s house, a bag of baked pastries held tightly in her other hand. She had heard about Rose’s recent breakup and had decided to attempt to cheer the other girl up. Ever since she’d come home, everyone had been focused on her and she was grateful for the chance to take care of someone else for a change.

We Need a Little Mending || Rose & Atalia

She just needed a minute alone--a minute away from the nurses and Levi and her brother. As soon as she thought that, she hated herself, but the memories of the last time she was in one of those rooms was too much. Atalia had excused herself from the room as the nurses came to check on Chryson and made a bee-line straight for the bathroom. Her hands were shaking and her neck throbbed in a phantom pain she knew wasn’t actually there anymore. For once since she’d found out Chryson was alive, she let herself cry for herself--to let all her fear and anger out.

As quickly as she started, she pulled herself together and splashed water on her face to take away some of the redness. Though she’d let herself cry, she didn’t want anyone asking if she was okay. Her mind instantly pushed Rose to the fore-front. Her best friend would have been able to see through any charade. Atalia found herself wishing that Rose had been there, but she’d ruined all chances of mending that relationship the second she revealed the mark. Taking one last look in the mirror, she moved toward the door, only to jump when someone else opened the door. “Rose...Hi.”
