SaL anon here and this week's Malex feelings I think are best captured by Pacific Blues. I've got some mixed feelings on the music in this one, especially in the beginning where the trombone(?) is overpowering Ryan's voice, but I think the lyrics are perfect for this week since they perfectly encompass the feeling of uncertainty (applies to Malex and their fans). What more perfect Malex intro than "if I could rearrange my words I'd say what I mean"? But as always Ryan brings hope in the end.

Hello my friend! I’m so excited to talk about this one today! So the blog post about how this song was made is actually super interesting with how he got those sounds, and I kinda like the weird trombone sound because it feels like you’re underwater. I also like the upright bass which we don’t get too often. But as for the lyrics?! This is SUCH a good week to do this song with where Malex is at! So let’s jump in, shall we!

if i could rearrange my words, i’d say what i mean. if i could learn to count the cards, i’d risk everything. imagine how brave i’d be if i knew i was safe. if i could only know the end, i’d be a prodigy of faith.

if i had a treasure map, oh the answers i’d find. i’d dust off the artifacts ’til i made ‘em all shine.

This is exactly where Malex are right now! They are both pretty sure of their own feelings, but SO uncertain if they are returned that they can’t risk anything. “imagine how brave i’d be, if i knew i was safe” always hits me in the chest but man with a Malex lens it’s even more painful. 

everything i know is borrowed, broken or blind, and what i’ve seen of beautiful feels merely implied. is it the treatment of symptoms or a touch of divine? i guess the truth is that the truth is of complex design.

God knows that i know we’re little boats in the great big sea. setting sail after sail in the hopes of finding a breeze.

I love the dreamy, rocking-in-a-boat quality this song has and, as we just revisited South, it’s interesting to talk about another song dealing with the nature of truth being complex, which works so well for both of them, and especially for an episode that started with “everything is not as it seems”! I also love the idea of finding beauty in the broken. Which, for a junkyard handyman like Michael, and two broken boys falling for each other, is especially poignant. I also like the imagery of setting up sails again and again in hope. It’s very on brand for Malex.

if ignorance is bliss, then i guess i’m in heaven. but this hesitant kiss sends me back to the grasp of the sea.

I love the line “so it goes with an ever-changing definition of right” which is just so good because what’s right for someone at one point might not be right for them later, and our ideas of “right” and “truth” are constantly shifting. Not to bring up other alien media but that line from Men in Black always gets me, “Yesterday you knew we were alone in the universe. Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow.”* And then that lilting moment where Ryan’s voice rises singing about a “hesitant kiss” just gets me in all the soft Malex feels! This was a lovely pick for today and something soft and hopeful to keep up going until Monday! 

*paraphrased because I’m not looking it up, I haven’t the time!
