Pacific Queen

The Pacific Queen apple is the worst thing to happen to the Pacific since the Fukushima disaster. So shockingly awful that upon first sight this apple caused my dog to cower under the couch in fear. Coming in with an outstanding pedigree, this New Zealand-born, darker cousin of the Pacific Rose has a chalky, dense interior reminiscent of an old man’s discarded liverwurst sandwich. And to dare show its dank, spotted face during peak SweeTango season is a travesty. My dog will never be the same again.

An unknown press photographer in Long Beach captured them in a small fraction of a second, the old three-masted square-rigger and the brand-new helicopter: old and new, past and future.

Helicopters were exotic aircraft in 1947 and newspapers coined names like “the Flying Eggbeater” and “the Whirlybird” for them.…

Mexico: Pacific Queen Sandra Avila released from prison

A legendary figure of the Mexican drug traffickers’ world, “Pacific Queen” Sandra Avila, 57, was released from jail Saturday after seven years in prison, said the Mexican Ministry of Justice.

Arrested in 2007, she left the federal prison in Tepic, in the state of Nayarit; faces covered and without making a declaration, told the TV station Milenio.
