Ed Rickett's Lab is still located at 800 Cannery Row, sandwiched between the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a giant Hilton hotel thing. 🔥 A fire in 1936 burned it to the ground--taking Ed's priceless research, and his precious library- which contained a collection of rare poetry books and scientific texts. Luckily, the manuscript for his seminal work, "Between Pacific Tides," had already been submitted to the publisher, so it survived. 📖 Ed was able to rebuild the lab, thanks to his best buddy, John Steinbeck, who then became a 50% partner in Pacific Biological Laboratories; today you can still see the lab, almost as it was in their time. Walk behind it to see the concrete specimen tanks where Ed kept all his sea critters--before embalming them and sending them off to universities and museums around the country. 🐙 🦀 🐡 #edricketts #obsessed #edhead #pacificbiologicallaboratories #pacificbiologicaldreamboat #historicalpreservation #marinebiology #betweenpacifictides #montereybayaquarium #canneryrow #steinbeck #montereybay #montereyart #illustration #painting (at Pacific Biological Laboratories)
