luck was a quality the teenager clearly was incapable of possessing. he had been watching his brother while his parents were away on a business trip. greg, of course, insisted that they go on a walk through the woods. wirt, on the contrary, promptly declined-- after all, what good was walking around aimlessly? there was nothing to gain except a giant headache. however, greg was probably just as persistent as wirt was, perhaps even more so than wirt, given the fact that greg was still a kid. so, reluctant and already regretting his decision, the brunet decided to take him on a walk.
they traveled for a while, greg talking loudly about nothing remotely interesting. wirt hadn’t been paying too much attention to where they were going, or even if they had been following a proper trail with landmarks. the walk just continued to steep higher, and higher, and higher... the next course of events proved to be disastrous-- greg had tripped on a rock, causing him to bump into wirt, thus making wirt fall into a pit that had been cleverly covered with forest foliage and branches. somehow he was still alive. bruised, yes, and his ankle was rather swollen, but alive. at first, he panicked. a lot. much more than any teenager should, really. but then, as he wandered about, trying to find his way out, he only found himself growing more and more...frustrated.
nobody seemed to be of any fair help. first the talking flower, then these...strange creatures that somehow knew english, it was all too bizarre and quite frankly wirt didn’t want to deal with any of this. he didn’t ask to be stuck on a pilgrimage for home, and he certainly was no protagonist. all he wanted to do was find the closest exit.
eventually-- somehow-- he came across what he hoped to be a human. they were very small, probably around greg’s age, if wirt had to take a guess. they didn’t seem too excited to see him when he approached them. in fact, they didn’t fully express any emotion at all. they just kind of...stared. wirt tried to ignore this fact-- he was too focused on the task at hand.
❛ Hey, ah. Kid. I don’t suppose you happen to know a way out of here, do you?...I, don’t exactly know where I am, and I need to go home, right away. So if you could maybe draw up a map, or even write down some directions, that would be really great. ’
