Love Me
The loud laughter of the two families--no, the one big family--echoed from inside of the warehouse. With all of those people in there, it didn't look so...uninviting.
I smiled to myself, shoving my hands in my pockets and taking a deep breath of fresh air.
As much as I love them all? It gets loud in there. Bird kids+werewolves=a nearly intolerable din. Still, it was happy noise. Good noise. The sort of noise none of us were used to hearing terribly often.
"Your head split wide open too, huh?"
I nearly jumped out of my skin, but relaxed. Derek. Of course.
"I'm going to start tying bells to your ankles or something."
"Hn."
"Or maybe around your neck. A cute little bell collar for--"
"Alright, wait a minute." His tone was stern but there was something like a grin on his face. I snorted gracefully.
"Yes and no, to answer your question. I love those kids and it's good that they're having fun but the noise level is--"
"Out of control. Absolutely."
We were quiet for a while, but it wasn't uncomfortable. In fact, standing in silence with Derek was the most comfortable I ever was. There was an undeniable peace to it. An ever-temporary stillness.
"You're doing pretty well. Just so you know."
I was a bit surprised at his words, turning to stare at him dumbly. "What?"
"What you're doing with those kids...it's great. No one would expect them to be in good spirits after everything they've been through. A lesser leader couldn't get them to this point. And you're only fiftee--"
"Sixteen. Probably." I huffed indignantly, my hands finding my hips. "Derek Hale, you've never treated me like some little kid and if you start now I swear--"
Derek threw his hands up defensively. "Okay, okay. I don't treat you like a little kid because you're not. Don't get defensive with me."
There he goes again. Telling me not to do things because he knows he does them himself. Don't run away, don't get defensive, don't resist letting other people help you. Hypocrite.
"I'm not defensive. I'm about as defensive as I am a little kid."
"You might want to reconsider that comparison." He shrugged and made a face.
"Someone's feeling sassy this evening." I smirked. He stiffened and straightened up, clearing his throat and adjusting his oh-so-cool leather jacket.
"Am not."
"Now who's getting defensive?"
Without warning, he reached out and shoved my face away. I made a strangled noise of surprise and stumbled.
Blink.
Blink.
I laughed, shoving into him in response.
"I'm glad we're doing this. The whole everyone-hanging-out thing? It's nice. It's like--"
"A family? Yeah. I agree."
I chewed my lip to stifle my goofy grin, which failed. I stepped in front of him.
"You're a pretty lucky pup to have run into me in the woods, you know. Even more lucky I didn't hand you your little puppy dog tail on a silver dinner platter."
He rolled his eyes at me in the sassiest, alpha-est way he could manage. "If you say so."
"Oh, I say so." I nodded fervently.
"Well, we can argue as long as you'd like about whose ass would've been kicked? But the first part is...at least partly true."
"Partly?"
"Yeah, partly. My pack has enough cocky teenagers and I don't need another one."
Teenager. Did he have to keep reminding me that I was younger? The age difference was probably only a couple of years, but it bothered me that he kept saying it.
"Can you stop calling me that?"
"What, cocky?"
"No, a teenager."
"But you are a teenager, Max."
I scoffed. "I'm not--I mean, I am, but I'm mature for my age!"
"Sometimes. But sometimes, you act like a teenager." There was a definite smirk there and it made my blood bubble.
"Shut up! You're not even that much older."
"Old enough to call you a teenag--"
I cut him off with a searing, angry kiss to the lips. God, shut the heck up, will you? I remember a time when I thought I'd really love to get Derek to open up to me. Those days were long gone, and I couldn't get him to shut up.
When I felt him kiss back, I realized what I'd done.
Stupid me and my impulse kissing.
My stomach was churning and my internal freakout was completely under way. And he was kissing back. I was losing my ever loving and wondering why I'd DONE that and he was kissing me back for crying out loud.
I pulled away, managing not to whine in protest, and I imagine I looked something like a deer in headlights.
"Max--"
"Watch the kids for me, pup? I've got something I've got to do real fast." My words were shaky and unconvincing and I turned on my heels to make distance between us and launch myself into the sky. But apparently, alpha had other plans.
My wrist was grabbed and I was yanked back, raising an eyebrow at him. "What are you doing?"
"Max." He stared at me, as if trying to get through to me somehow. Trying to tell me not to run. Not to run and hide and then come back and pretend it never happened like I'd always done with things that meant change. "It's okay."
And just like that?
It was okay.
((OMG OKAY I'M SORRY. This wasn't GOING to be romantic fluff. But the conversation about Max wanting to kiss Derek was stuck in my head when I was writing and this happened. Also the ones about her not running from stuff. And stuff. And conversations we've had about pack and flock celebrations at some point? Idk i needed this tonight wyhfurjnfgb IM SORRY))
You guys
Need to check your lupine privilege
Wait...
Do the pack guys make up like...the majority of the lacrosse team?

You guys all play, right?
Uh. How many people are even on a lacrosse team? Because you guys seem to have the monopoly here.
Warning for the Pack
The Gasman is INCOMING.
Stand down wind.
