Lessons Learned from Entrepreneurs
Mike and I participated in a round table discussion at Queens University to discuss entrepreneurship in Charlotte, NC this week. The event was created in response to Nick Such, founder of Building Layer, visiting the campus to talk to graduate students. While here, Nick requested to meet with local entrepreneurs to discuss the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurs face in the Charlotte area.
Eleven entrepreneurs, community leaders, professors, and digital media experts discussed a variety of topics over the course of two hours. I learned so much from experienced leaders in the entrepreneurial world and felt it would benefit other entrepreneurs who are just getting started. Here are the top 5 things I learned from successful entrepreneurs who have sold a business.
Not all entrepreneurs are rich in the beginning. It’s easy to believe that successful entrepreneurs have a lot of money to start a company the right way and it’s just not true.
Don’t get wrapped up in the logistics. You’ve started a business. You’ve got the idea rolling. Now, you focus 90 days on completing your business paperwork, designing business cards, finding a logo, locating office space, choosing the right printer, and buying the perfect laptop. STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING! Your focus should be SELL, SELL, SELL! Spend that 90 days knocking on doors and generating interest. Once you sell your product, you can focus on getting the perfect business cards.
Starting a business is frustrating. There will be days when the phone doesn’t ring and everything seems to break. Pick yourself up and keep going. The key to being an entrepreneur is having confidence.
Don’t accept investments too quickly. If you’re lucky enough to find an investor, make sure it’s the right decision for your company. Taking money early means there’s a person who has a vested interest in the success of the company and may not want to be as risky or try things like you.
Get a mentor. If you know a successful entrepreneur, ask them to mentor you. If you don’t, start attending networking events to find someone that can provide a fresh perspective and help you answer tough questions.
These are just a few of the lessons I learned in that meeting. I could easily make a list of 20 more but I imagine people would stop reading after awhile. I hope readers will find these tips helpful. I would encourage everyone who is starting a business to find similar small groups and learn your own lessons.
