Hi. Im actually very curious about how to tell a wolf from a wolf dog. Like, i know how a wolf differs from a dog (even those that are pretty wolf-like like husky or malamute), but how about a wolf dog (or an offspring of a wolf and, say, a husky) that carries some very similar physical traits to a wolf?

Though I spend so much of my time surrounded by wolfdogs on a daily basis, it's still a wonderful treat to meet and observe more of them. My Board of Directors was recently invited to discuss rescue operations with friends at Wolf Haven International - the largest wolf conservation group in the country - but not before a private behind-the-scenes tour of their establishment. Backtracking a bit: I have always loved wolves, and in fact, I had my 12th birthday party at Wolf Haven around 13 years ago. If you'd told me back then that I would be invited back some day to share experience and learn from them in a professional capacity, well - I wouldn't have believed it. Yesterday's was an inspirational visit, and we got to observe more than 30 wolves and wolfdogs during our time there. Afterwards, we went to visit friends who are also heavily involved in the wolfdog world, and who foster animals for Pack West. I got to meet Ivar's grandmother, and spent some time snuggling with Furiosa, a rescued low-content we pulled from a California shelter. In all, I probably saw more than 40 wolves and wolfdogs yesterday. Oregon to Oklahoma. Oklahoma back to Oregon. 30 hours each way, 10 hours of driving per day. Alone on the road, sleeping sprawled across the seat in the cab each night. Waking in a new place, a new state, a new time zone. I forget to eat, so my man back home has packed me biscuits and fruit, and friends along the way give me canned goods to sustain myself by in case I don't find any fresh roadkill. I don't miss home; I don't even miss my friends (and I never miss my family), but I do miss my dogs, and Blackjack. I can't wait to be home to see them, though a part of me wishes they could join me on the road. Low-content #wolfdog Jude attempts sitting patiently during a training session. You can see from the tension of the skin around his eyes it was hard for him - he was really excited at the beginning of the session and getting frustrated easily, so we stuck with well-known behaviors and for short durations. With all the precipitation in the last week, the wolfdog containment at #packwestwolfdogrescue turned into a mud pit. The woofers loved it, but the humans, not so much. Volunteer and staff hauled in a cubic yard of bark mulch one wheelbarrow at a time to cover up the worst of the mud. It won't keep the wading pool water any cleaner, but the woofers can keep their feet dry now. #wolfdogrescue #maintenance #behindthescenes #btsatpackwest
