OKAY im fleshing this out rn so all you get for now is that ! martyn and cleo are pilots of obsidian widow, grian and scar are pilots of hellion watcher, impulse and bdubs are pilots of solar rogue, scott and pearl used to be the pilots of crimson hound, and scott and jimmy are the current pilots of crimson hound that was renamed echo phoenix !! joel and etho are techs of crimson hound/echo griffin and ren and bigb are techs of hellion watcher :)

But the peculiar sharpness she had noticed was - she couldn’t quite define it, describe it. He seemed just the slightest bit off, everything he did just a little - otherworldly? Not the best word, but she couldn’t think of another. Vaguely unsettling, there it was, in the certain aspects of him she discerned from a distance. Indefinably, mostly, the strangeness; it seemed to be just - ingrained in the way he was, although she did notice one thing in particular. His smile was toothy and rather - well. Maybe not dangerous, not quite, but certainly not normal. Too sharp, too other. Too much of something she didn’t quite understand. (Then again, maybe it was dangerous. Maybe he was.)

quick outline for pacrimau jack’s backstory before i start hw

born early 2000s ish somewhere along the west coast, probably california

grew up normally enough with his parents and gray, got accepted to mit to study astronomy (ha) and left right before the first kaiju attacks started

was home for a class break when the first attack hit america, in san francisco. he was in the city with his family 

he and gray got separated from their parents and managed to make it out alive, but their mom and dad both died in the attack

the same thing that happened to mako happened to him, essentially- alone in the destroyed city, terrified and confused, almost killed by a kaiju but saved by someone in a jaeger- he never found out who

dropped out of school immediately after and joined the developing jaeger program, left gray at home with extended family (he was only thirteen when the attack happened)

nearly died when the scientists tested the one-pilot system on him

he was one of the first people to actually pilot a jaeger after he was matched with gwen in the program

also met owen and tosh while he was in training

gray turns eighteen and tries to join the program and jack adamantly refuses to let him in, cue lasting enmity and frustration

you know alternatively i kind of like the idea of jack and gray originally being a team and then gray dying in a battle the same way yancy does. something to consider

also dated john hart, another potential candidate, in training, but john dropped out and went illegal, selling scavenged kaiju parts on the black market

yes john is essentially hannibal chau i Had to

anyways jack and gwen (or jack and gray) become wildly successful jaeger pilots, get cocky and risky, etc, etc, cue opening of the movie

after owen tries drifting with a kaiju and nearly fries his brain tosh finds him and he explains what happens and what he saw and when he’s finished he says “if you get my drift” and tosh almost slaps him

i’m putting the current outline of the pacrim au under the cut so you can all hold me accountable

base off the north coast of canada, just below alaska

gwen and jack start off as a team, spend a little bit of time with establishment (think the first couple scenes of the movie)

characterization like that in miracle day- ruthless, trigger-happy, risky, brilliant, adrenaline junkies, extremely close to each other

they let their guard down thinking they’ve killed the kaiju and it comes back and takes out the left side of the jaeger

they’re still in the drift together when it happens the same way raleigh and his brother (i can’t remember his name oh my GOD) were

gwen’s last thought is “i love you” and an attempt to forcibly push jack out of the drift so he can survive long enough to get away from the kaiju

jack makes it back alive, barely, same as raleigh

rhys hates him because he was the one who recruited gwen as a jaeger pilot, got her addicted to the danger of it and steadily pulled her farther away from normal, safe civilian life with rhys and anwen (her contract was almost up and she was about to go back to off-base life when she died)

owen and tosh worked at the base as part of gwen and jack’s technical team (owen is involved in the tactical and logistical aspect, tosh in the technology)

all three of them move to a base off the north coast of japan, jack gets a position working , owen and tosh join another team

while all this is happening, the jaeger program is going downhill fast as larger categories start coming through, just like in the movie

pilots start being recruited rather than taken as volunteers more and more, previous jaeger pilots are more and more sought after and a lot of people know jack and knew his record with gwen but no one’s desperate enough to ask someone who a. piloted a jaeger by themselves and b. was drifting with someone while they died to go back into the field. yet.

also while this was happening, ianto was piloting with lisa on a base in hawaii

essentially the same thing happened as happened with jack and gwen, except ianto was known for being extremely careful on missions (and so was lisa) and it happened anyway

as the categories coming through start to get higher and the wall plans fail again and again the japanese base’s marshall finally sucks it up and asks jack to go back into the field

the same thing happens with ianto and the hawaiian base’s marshall

both of them accept- morally ambiguous danger junkie jack applies and ianto is still so, so angry about lisa’s death

ianto moves to the japanese base and is paired with jack even though the odds of them being compatible are really, really low

they are

they bond in large part because of the fact that they both lost their partners and the people they loved most in the world in the same way

the first time they drift together they’re both overwhelmed by the other’s memories and consciousness and ianto almost loses control of the jaeger the same way mako did

they come really, really close to destroying the entire base, bringing their compatibility and whether they should be sent into the field to fight into question

while all this is going on two new pilots are being brought on board from the cut hawaiian base. one, rex, is a veteran and extremely risky in battle. his old partner retired so he’s taking on a green but promising pilot, esther

jack is involved in esther’s training and he gets attached to her in a big-brother kind of way. he also develops some animosity towards rex partly because of his seeming disregard for esther’s safety and partly because jack knows what can happen when a pilot gets too confident and forgets where he is, who he is, how fragile and vulnerable he himself is compared to what he’s fighting and tries to tell rex but rex, characteristically, won’t listen to him

cue tension

also cue esther gradually developing her jaeger skills until she’s as much of a force to be reckoned with as gwen used to be

vera worked at the hawaiian base as head doctor when rex was there

she was also at the forefront of the original push to develop sufficient technology to combat the kaijus when the attacks first started

she was actually the person who developed the two-pilot system and helped design the biomedical aspect of the jaegers; she knows how the 2-pilot rig works better than anyone

meanwhile owen and tosh are trying to work out the long-term aspects of the crisis at the japanse base while jack and ianto are in training i.e. find a way to close the breach and get rid of the kaiju threat for good

which leads to the whole “drifting with a kaiju” debacle

owen basically pulls the same shit that newt pulls, drifts with a kaiju, eventually enlists tosh’s help in figuring out what’s going on behind the attacks

the kaiju attack/hannibal chau thing in tokyo happens (question: who is hannibal?)

maybe john makes an appearance as hannibal? jack’s obnoxious criminal ex-boyfriend i mean it wouldn’t be much of a stretch

tosh predicts the double event and jack and ianto + rex and esther go out to fight the two category fours, jack and ianto taking a nuclear bomb with them

rex and esther play the same role that chuck and pentecost do- they detonate their jaeger to get rid of one of the kaijus and commit suicide so that jack and ianto can finish the mission

basically the end of the movie, ianto gets to the surface, jack detonates the jaeger and barely makes it out alive but the breach is closed

ok so here's the theory. jack and gwen? fucking drift compatible as shit. so much so that they become cocky, their amount of drops equating to their amount of successes. this ends up becoming their downfall, and, just like in the movie, while on a double mission with another jaeger (run by owen and tosh, but i'll get to that), gwen ends up dying, and jack survives, and owen and tosh bring him back to base.

so, of course they mourn, all three of them, and they move on. because that’s awful, and gwen’s bf rhys is left without the love of his life and it’s terrible. so jack takes up a military position in one of the bases, and runs tosh and owen’s missions. a few years later, the kaiju situation gets worse as higher categories keep coming through, meaning more casualties. another jaeger falls, and lisa hallett dies, but co pilot (and lover) ianto jones survives.

for a year, ianto quits, but gets a job at one of the bases. he doesn’t like telling people he was once a jaeger pilot, because more and more keep on dying, no one wants the job any more, and ianto’s work experience needs to stay hidden if he wants to live. jaeger candidates are not picked on drift compatibility any more, but moreso strengths. being one in the past is the ultimate strength.

however, someone on the base finds out that he was a jaeger pilot, and they find him, and honest to god the world has gone to shit, and is on the brink of collapse, so they need jaeger pilots now. tosh and owen are some of the only ones left, and all the others are being sent to the base ianto’s on currently. with jack. unfortunately for both of them, they’re forced back into the field, with only weeks before a double event is predicted by a guy who looks strangely like owen? ( :D )

so they’re forced together, jack and ianto, regardless of drift compatibility. at first, they don’t get along, but when put into the jaeger, and seeing each other’s history, they bond over similar situations. so they go off and fight the kaiju together, and then imagine the movies events, just where everyone survives, and jack and ianto and owen and tosh are the jaeger pilots.

HHHHH this is So Good and i’m so invested in this au fuck okay here i have some more ideas

jack and ianto were originally a drift compatible team and they were so incredible that they got cocky and while they’re on a mission ianto is killed and jack survives and drags himself back to civilization the same way yancy does

CCAN YOU IMAGINE THAT SCENE CAN YOU IMAGINE JACK TALKING ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO DRIFT WITH HTE PERSON HE LOVED AS HE DIED BECA USE I CAN AND IT’S AWFUL

jack eventually reluctantly goes back into the field because The World Needs Saving (and also jack the hypocrite and morally questionable danger junkie still applies) and gets paired with gwen and they’re terrifying in action 

rhys the civilian gradually grows to despise jack for taking gwen essentially away from him and from normality and safety

DURING THE DOUBLE EVENT JACK AND GWEN GO WITH OWEN AND TOSH WH O ARE ALSO DRIFT COMPATIBLE  (owen and tosh can you IMAGINE) and owen and tosh play thesame role as pentecost and chuck 

anyways i love to die and this au owns my soul thanks
