Yesterday’s excuse me catfish caught while flipping wood for bass. Fun fight in a kayak, but I wish I was fighting a meanie greenie. Going into yesterday’s final tourney of the season, I was sitting in the top 10 for Angler of the Year, only to have a poor showing. A disaster. I didn’t fish clean, too many mistakes, catching only small bass when switching to stick worm. Definitely not what I caught them in the last three weeks . Congratulations to the winner, AoY, and RoY. These are redemption fish after losing a monster fish last Sunday when it broke my rod. Same approach, different body of water. It was high noon with sun beaming down at you. All you have to show at this point are some dink fish. But you know you have the confidence to catch them deep. It takes patience. Smallmouth tourney was postponed, so I went chasing greenies. I caught all my 17”+ fish in deeper water with 21” the largest. All were caught on deep diving crankbait and jig. This time of year, grass out on the Potomac is gold. If you find it, hold onto it. I found some in practice, but couldn’t get to it on day one with water sucked out of the Potomac tributaries. On day two, I targeted wood. While I caught plenty of fish, my largest was a 16.5” fish. I needed 18-20” fish to have a chance. I ended the tourney in the 24th spot out of 79 anglers. I still had fun, though. Thanks to the #NVKBA staff for putting up another great event. On day one, wind and tide gave me the Mutombo no no, not in my house, to Plan A and B. Another angler sat on my Plan C, so I hunkered down 50 yards away from him. I was casting parallel to the bank that was getting hammered by the wind. I was able to catch a few with three only being keepers. I’m currently sitting 23 out of 79 anglers.
