I didn't listen to these guys on repeat much, but their vibe feels nostalgic to me for some reason. like a callback to some of the more straightforward rock of the 00s. this song feels like something that would have been playing over the intercom at the public pool when I was in middle school.

Perfume LOCKS - 2/23/2015

Latest Perfume LOCKS episode is up! Note: Since Professor Notilda & Nocchi's initials are the same, I'll refer to Notilda as"PN" in the translation below. 

I will add in images when they start to appear online.

(starting at 0:36) First segment will be English words that you can learn by listening to Perfume songs.

Kashiyuka (0:45): It's been a while since that professor has been here.

A-chan: You might be right.

(Ms. Notilda introduces herself. She then says she heard that Perfume is performing at SXSW. The members thank her and she goes to on to explain what SXSW is as A-chan giggles in the background. The members are talking in background saying that her Japanese has improved. A-chan says, "she just keeps talking." Professor Notilda asks if they'll need an interpreter for the event. The members say they probably will to which the professor says it's only a six hour trip from where she lives in Canada. She says she wants to come to Texas and translate for them. [Of course, I do too. Anyway…] The professor finishes by asking what they'll be doing in Austin.)

K: (2:08) We're going to be performing a show at SXSW.

PN: I see. Being able to perform at SXSW is going to fun, right A-chan?

A: (2:22) Yes, definitely.

PN: The entire city of Austin becomes like a festival. (She then reads what is written on the SXSW website about Perfume.

Nocchi: (3:14) Why is this written on the site?

PN: This is written because, the great ones from Japan are coming so get excited as you countdown to see them (rough translation).

(Professor then says there's no lesson today. She was just excited to hear that Perfume was performing at SXSW and flew from Canada to Japan to tell them. She says it would have been fine just to Skype, but she decided to be there in person instead. A-chan then confirms that she's going to go home without giving them a lesson. Professor says she doesn't have any time because she's leaving immediately to go back to Canada. She then wishes them a nice trip and leaves right before 4:00.)

[Intro]

A-chan provides an update about the last episode about the high school student who wanted to receive Valentine chocolates from Perfume. The first-year boy (Pipin-chan-kun) from Kanagawa said: "On the day before Valentine's Day, it was my birthday and my girlfriend of four years broke up with me." A-chan then repeats the scenario to Nocchi and Kashiyuka.

A: (5:07) His now ex-girlfriend was maybe feeling sad and couldn't figure out how to continue the relationship with him and maybe she was just trying to let him down nicely? "But on my birthday?! Is that really nice?!" That's what you want to say, huh, Pipin-chan? (5:32) Yea, that might have been the case. We don't really know. It may have been their destiny and maybe after this, he'll meet someone who truly loves him or maybe his ex will have a change of heart and make things right. [she's been reading too many shojou manga LOL] We don’t know how this is going to play out.  (She continues saying that his ex might realize she was wrong and try to make things right with him. They decide to send him chocolates. A-chan says to enjoy the chocolates, heal his sorrows and dance Chocolate Disco. [Side note: I WANT CHOCOLATES FROM PERFUME TOO!])

A: (6:30) During last Thursday's lesson, we tried to figure out other people who were more amazing than ourselves (rough translation). Basically, these people are better than Perfume.

N & K: There isn't anyone, right?

A: We are Perfume.

N & K: We ARE Perfume.

K: If it's we are MORE than Perfume, that's scary. But if its people who are more knowledgeable about Perfume than we are, then there's a chance. There are a lot of fans that remember a lot about us. When students send us questions… for example, do you remember what you answered during various magazine interviews?

A & N: (7:11) Nahhh (laughs)

A: And on top of that, we don't just do one interview. It's usually a series of interviews in one sitting. So we can't really help it if we keep saying the same things over and over.

K: An interview when Cling Cling was about to go on sale. When A-chan heard Cling Cling, what did she say about Nakata-san when she heard those cute lyrics and the catchy music?

A: Me? Umm… well, I thought he brought it over to this side (Kashiyuka laughs) … so like… he brought that Kyary Pamyu Pamyu-type feeling over to Perfume. (Buzzer sounds, although Kashiyuka says she was close. A-chan then tries to answer again but Nocchi is talking over her so I couldn't make out what she said.)

K: The correct answer was, "Nakata-san… you've come after us." (They all laugh)

A: (8:31 – Song starts to play in background) That's right. It was really catchy and he came after us.

K: (8:43) During an interview for Sweet Refrain, what did A-chan say when she was asked how she spent her days off?

A: Eh? How I spend my days off? So I probably said, cleaning. (Buzzer sounds, but again, she's close.) Cleaning, laundry, and ??

K: It was a year ago, so…

A-chan then spends another minute guessing at what it could be by saying, "It could be cleaning the futon, but it's not that, or it could be cleaning the restroom but then again no…" The buzzer sounds and Kashiyuka reveals the answer: "Danshari" which is basically cleaning up clutter and moving toward a minimalist lifestyle.

K: During her days at the Hiroshima Actor's School, Nocchi referred to it as her ___ days. What kind of days were they?

A: This doesn't say when the interview happened either.

Nocchi guesses a few answers but ultimately can't get the right answer. Kashiyuka reveals the answer: Ike Ike (having high spirits) days. Nocchi says that one of her answers (Gakeppuchi) essentially meant the same thing, but then says that was after they moved to Tokyo, the city was so overwhelming. She then agrees that during their Hiroshima days, they were Ike Ike and says they were skinny like exclamation marks.

Kashiyuka then says that these were just three examples and if there happens to be a student out there with a question they think can stump Perfume, to write it down with the answer and send it in.

The two guys at the end then agree that it's difficult to remember everything they’ve said, but the one guy mentions a couple of things that he remembers.)

A-chan Radio Show - Ep. 14 - Guest: KashiYuka

After posting the most recent translation for A-chan’s radio show on FB, I found that a lot of people didn’t know that A-chan had her own solo radio show. While most of the episodes are either with a special guest that not many people know/care about or “mail specials” I figured I’d go ahead and translate this episode from July 2014 when KashiYuka was the guest. Nocchi guest starred in the following episode and I’ll have that up sometime this weekend (I hope).

And yes, I know, these pics look weird without Nocchi in them.

(Start at 1:18)

A-chan: Just the two of us together…

K: Right?! It’s weird! We’ve spoken when all three of us aretogether or at a gathering/meeting, but not just the two of us by ourselves, right? This may be the first time.

A: Even when we take pictures with just two of us, it feels weird, but speaking with just the two of us is really weird.

K: Right? Right now we’re super face-to-face with one another.

(They continue on about how weird it feels for a few more seconds)

A & K: (1:51) Normally Nocchi is next to Kashiyuka…

K: … and we’re speaking in a triangular shape. So we’re still facing one another but without Nocchi here, it feels weird.

[Song Break]

(They come back from the song and continue to talk about how weird it is that Nocchi isn’t there. Kashiyuka says that it feels strange that no one is following her after she introduces herself. A-chan says the same, but she’s getting used to it. This goes on for about a minute.)

A: (3:32) Today, Yuka-chan has brought along a theme she’d like to discuss. (to Yuka) You thought it up for me? I’m so happy!

K: I was thinking, what would be a good topic to talk about…

A: Oh, on origami…

K: I wrote it out.

A: Cute. So stylish.

K: There were three and I want A-chan to choose the topic.

A: Ok, I’ll take the red colored flower.

K: (4:00) Shojyo manga.

A: Ahhh! I’m so happy! Well, because Yuka-chan is a manga master. You just say the title, shoujyo manga, the grown up comics and youth age comics…

K: Right, I read all kinds, but the mangas that I have in common with A-chan are shoujyo manga and so today, I’d like you to introduce me to some shoujyo manga that I haven’t read.

A: Oh… but if you’ve read all the ones that I’ve read then what should we do? (laughs)

K: Well, I haven’t read (Kyou no) Kira-kun.

A: Really?

K: Yea.

A: Kira-kun is really good.

K: Also, like, the chubby girl mangas, I haven’t read. Also Honey (x Honey). I haven’t read all of those.

A: I also read the famous ones from way back when… those are good to. Those are like, “the shoujyo manga.”

(A-chan goes on to summarize one of the pocha-mangas she recently read and Kashiyuka likes the way the way it sounds. This goes on for about a minute.)

K: (6:13) Garasu no Kamen (Glass Mask) has 49 volumes and I read them all over the course of a month and a half and while I was reading that, I also read all the volumes for Tokimeki Tonight. Tokimeki Tonight had 30 books as well as Makabeku no Jijou and also Tokimeki Midnight has 9 volumes, so all together 40 volumes… so during the span of a month and a half, I read 90 volumes of manga. And then on top of that, I was also reading Jump manga and Aku no Hana.

A: It’s seriously like, how much are you reading?

K: Seriously. If it’s reading material, even though it is all manga…

(Skipping ahead a bit)

A: (7:10) But reading 49 volumes of Garasu no Kamen, midway through did your spirit break?

K: With Garasu no Kamen, no. It’s a really good. It’s really interesting. I also think that people like us who work in front of people should read it.

A: You know how their eyes are super sparkly. I didn’t think you would read those types.

K: Yea, I was sort of ignoring them for a while.

(Kashiyuka goes on to say that by ignoring them, it made her more curious about the manga. She says that with manga, it’s the white of the eyes that are used to express emotion, but warns A-chan that there is a lot of writing in those books. A-chan then asks her what is so great about manga and Kashiyuka replies that manga can take you places you never been and jobs you’ve never had and they become an entrance to worlds you’re not familiar with. So if it’s a dance manga or a skating manga, you may be familiar with it in general, but the manga will take you into the minute parts of it and show you where the passion is and what the rules are. She goes on for a couple of minutes because that’s what happens when you get Kashi starts talking about manga. LOL)

[Song Break]

A: (11:02) To me this song in a word, Yuka-chan is… cute. Beautiful. Elegant. Cool. There are all sorts of words, but the word “cute” is this song. At the start of the video, the “knee touch”… that warms me up. It’s pure/loveable. It’s so pure, it’s so cute. (Kashiyuka keeps cutting in as A-chan praises her.)

A: (cont., 12:04) During the first half, the conversation got really passionate.

K: Yea, with shoujyo manga.

(Kashiyuka warns her that once she starts reading manga, she won’t stop. A-chan jokes that there’s always a manga that comes out of Kashi’s bag. From there, she chooses the next topic - travel.)

A: This topic, I want to ask Yuka-chan about.

K: Whaa? Really?

A: With travel, you make your reservations and travel plans pretty quickly.

K: I’m one of those type of people who needs to make a schedule/plans. If I leave it to the last minute, I get full of anxiety. When I arrive, rather than enjoy myself, I’ll try to find a place to calm down. So first, figure out where you’re going and set up a schedule.

A: (13:17) So how do you start something like that? Like, I always want to travel. Yuka-chan always says, “I want to go here,” very definitively, so where does that begin?

K: It starts with time off. You take an extended amount of time off. For example, five days. So you look for places you want to spend five days. So if it’s overseas, it’s somewhere in Asia, if it’s within Japan, somewhere for three or four days, then come home and clean up and get ready to go back to work the next day. So you find the “kikan” (mainstay) and search places around it. Also, seasons. Places you can go will change depending on the seasons. So if it’s this season (it was July during this show), you’ll want to go somewhere cool like Hokkaido or on the flip side, you go to Okinawa.

A: Ah yea, somewhere super hot… Me, I make plans depending on the person.

K: You mean depending on who you’re going with? I see! That’s a new way of thinking!

(They both burst into laughter)

A: You were super enlightened right now.

K: I never thought of it like that.

A: And Yuka, you go with all sorts of people.

K: Right, like if they can go, we go.

A: For me, rather than where we’re going, it’s who I’m going with that is important.

K: That’s interesting.

A: It’s totally different, huh?

K: Totally.

A: So for example, I’ll ask Haruna (Harisenbon) the number of days she wants to go and from there we decide on where we will go.

K: Rather than where you want to go with someone else, it’s with who you go with and where that matters.

A: (15:29) Oh, so… something about exposing one of my secrets?

K: Right. For the people listening to this program, we’re going to expose a recent secret from their loveable A-chan. We’re in the same group so I can do this. First: Recently something A-chan has become engrossed in. I thought given the season, you were infatuated with wedge sole (shoes).

A: Ahhh!! You’re right!!

K: Right? Recently, you bought some new ones, didn’t you.

A: Now that I think about it, yes… (16:09) It feels summery. You tiptoe is out as well.

K: I don’t really wear wedge sole or open toe shoes, so really just the upper clothing is the only place I can express what season it is. So I look at A-chan’s shoes and know what season it is. I saw it recently and was like, “Summer is here.”

The other thing Kashiyuka points out if A-chan’s laugh. When they’re together chatting and something funny is said or happens, they’ll all laugh by A-chan’s laugh goes on a bit too long. When we’re in our travel van and everyone has stopped laughing, you’re still laughing full pitch. So with that extended laugh, they can all laugh again.

A: (18:16) Ok, it’s my turn. I have one of Yuka-chan’s secrets I’ll expose right now. Yuka-chan, who has hated vegetables all her life, has recently decided to conquer tomatoes!

K: It’s not that I’ve conquered them, but that I’m attempting to conquer them.

A: It’s admirable. You’re an adult now.

[Song Break]

A: (19:09) It was Yuka-chan’s first appearance. Is there anything else you’d like to say?

K: I do! It’s a continuation of the traveling conversation, but it’s something I’d like to have taught to me, but packing. We go traveling for work and vacation a lot, but first off, what do you begin packing with?

A: First off is, cosmetics. All the cosmetic shampoos and stuff, you put into mini-bottles and pack those. Then pajamas. And then clothes are all around me so I just choose whatever is around.

K: That’s reverse. I start with clothes. I put clothes in the upper left of the suitcase, underwear in the upper right, pajamas in the bottom left, cosmetics in the bottom right.

A: Whaa? You’ve got sections already chosen?

K: Yes.

(They go on to talk about how they put shoes in the “it doesn’t matter what happens” zone of the suitcase. A-chan adds that cosmetics are heavy.)
