On Building a Tumblr Theme

Well… it’s done. Correction: It’s Almost done. I’m still picking through it to fix little things here and there that keep coming up. To say this has been a battle for an old HTML guy like me is an understatement. -.- Before I get too deep, let’s flip this back a bit to why I decided to build a Tumblr theme for myself in the first place. I got bored while doing some other web work and thought about how my sites are all pretty visually similar. The reason: They come from the same code. The only two things I’ve ever changed up were the Biff site (as it’s purpose is completely different from my Main sites) and Tumblr (which I had no working knowledge with which to futz with). Since I can’t really screw too badly with the Biff site and I popped onto Tumblr so I could replace my old Rants page with something easier to update, I went ahead with the plan of “fixing” my Tumblr page. Why do I do these things? I have no idea. It’s probably the same reason I still do web work – I enjoy mass amounts of frustration that often leads to that unique ability to pay bills. o.O It started off well enough. I snagged the code from the themes I dug and noticed (to my surprise) that DIV tags and style sheets controlled things far less than I had originally thought. This gave me hope that I could figure things out without beating up on some poor CSS page and screwing my original site template up too badly. In fact, my newfangled Tumblr now boasts code originally written in… 2008? 2009? The main table it fairly recent, I know that for sure. After doing my usual thing updating my main sites (and a brief stop in Making-Books-ville), I decided to take a day or three to build this thing. Why such a short amount of time? My template still functioned. Having done the heavy lifting ahead of time, it’s a simple matter of forcing 10 pounds of existing code into a 2-pound page. Really, that’s what it felt like. Although Tumblr lays out the code in a fairly straightforward way on the site, it doesn’t have a straight up walkthrough saying “Element A” does this and “Element B” does that. Seeing the lack of notes in the code I was picking apart previously didn’t help much either. It was really a matter of trial and error. Thanks to a couple of guides that took forever to find and a handy dandy CSS cheat sheet, I have cobbled together something that matches up pretty well with my main sites’ existing design. It was a tough road but I got it done. The one thing I wish would happen is for the Tumblr folks to drop some screen grabs on their code page. I dig the straightforward nature of the page but a couple of visuals would really help guys like me see where I might have messed up and what horrors I’ve wrought.
