Frank knew he didn't hide how he felt about Karen when he looked at her. Just sad brown eyes that held adoration and longing and a mess of other things he didn't want to go into. He's not shocked that she noticed it, but the fact that she loves it, it makes him pause. "You like it?" His voice comes out gruff. "You know I'd still look at you like this no matter what you'd do, right? You told me a long time ago you didn't care about the shit I'd do, I never told you the same, but yeah, no matter what you did or do—I'll always see you like this."

He's not gonna lie and say he hadn't thought about it before. That if he loved her any less than he did or was more selfish that he'd be more than willing to be with her. The danger or quality of life she'd have with him wouldn't matter. They'd just be content for the time they would have, but Frank didn't want that.

The same way she wanted him to have an After, he wanted it to last. She didn't realize that. He didn't want a quick stint of happiness and then fall into a cesspit of fucking despair after life yanked it from him again. He wanted to die happy—with her—in some life that they were both content in having.

You meet all sorts of interesting people in a place like New York. From blind, crime-fighting lawyers to skull themed vigilantes. Although dangerous in her own way, especially with that keen brain of hers, Steven feels safe around Karen. Not only do they share the mutual friend of Frank Castle, but one of the others (namely, Jake) was eager to offer to kill Bullseye for her. Bullseye is alive... For now. But only because the system hasn't decided if killing Bullseye is worth starting a feud with other New York vigilantes.

It's nice to do something simple and relaxing with somebody. Karen's presence is warm and comforting as Steven continues to knit. His dog looks more like a rabid cat but he's new at this, okay? As if sensing his frustrations, Karen presses a soft kiss to the top of his head. "How is yours coming out so well? Have you known how to knit this whole time?"

He groaned, grumbling with annoyance at the empty space next to him in bed. All the while, his eyes followed her. Always sharp, always observant. They trailed over her pale skin, lingering on the sway of her hips as she walked, the swell of her ass. And once she was out of sight, Frank shifted so he was sitting up more against the headboard, pillows propped up behind him to make it more comfortable for them both, once Karen came back. One hand grabbed the necks of both beer bottles, the other arm hooking around her and tugging her closer, once she got back in bed. “Too long,” he grunted, holding one beer out to her.
