This has been on my mind for long but I’m gonna do this - please reblog this if you’re comfortable with pre-establishing relationships. Clark owed her far more than an an explanation could cure. She had dedicated her heart to him every single time he had ever needed her, and for the longest time he had believed that he would have always done the same for her. The way he adored her, loved her from afar and then up-close…she was more than someone special in his life, she had made him feel special; wanted. The only other person able to do so besides his parents.

In the end, Clark had done what he’d never thought possible; he’d let her down. Left her, not to return even when she needed him the most. He couldn’t deny that he was selfish and lost then, he could try and justify it all he wanted, but the outcome was still going to be the same. She was deeply hurt.

She’d reached out that hand and for a moment, he swore she was going to reject him; pause him in his tracks to remind him that he didn’t deserve her affection or forgiveness. Yet Lana surprised him still, by wrinkling his old shirt in her slender fingers and holding him there.

Then, there was her touch. Silk touch brushing against his collarbone, which drew out a deep, and longing sigh. The gentleness and the intention behind the touch led him to believe that maybe, just maybe she was willing to let the pain go in hopes of repairing the future.

The mention of the oil rig rescue and the…demolition of the lumber truck drew out a shy nod, but a nod nonetheless. The fact that she had drawn a conclusion leading back to him had reawakened that spark inside him that made him feel special; loved. She kept a look out; she was looking for him. Sheepishly, bright blues rose from the floor he had buried them in—searching for hers.

“-Clark…maybe I just needed you to save me.”

His heart dropped into his stomach, laying in the guilt and pain he’d been drowning in since this whole confrontation.  What she wanted, he wanted too.  Clark mustered enough courage to close the distance between them, and lifted his hands up to caress her face, thumbs wiping away the residual tears smeared at the corners of her eyes and down along her pinky cheeks.  A silent moment passed, but not a moment longer before he’d leaned in to gently kiss her cheek, or rather the very corner of her lips. He wasn’t grasping for things, he wouldn’t cross any lines, but he’d show her he cared, and that he had every intention of making it up to her.

“Then I will save you, Lana Lang. Today, tomorrow, and for the rest of my life.”

His sigh, deep and long, felt like it was being pulled from her own chest. She marveled at how familar he was to her, even after years apart. Gentle fingertips followed the curve of his collarbone as though no time had passed, that they were still unbound by responsibility and heartbreak. If only they were still chasing each other through cornfields and watching sunsets from the rooftops. Life rarely stayed so simple. 

Her lips parted to allow a quick inhale as he broke the space between them. With inhuman strength he held her face - all of her - together. Her face tilted towards his the way a flower seeks the sun, grateful for the tender touch that caught her tears. Lana’s lower lip quivered. She felt incredibly selfish for the guilt she saw etched into his features. The world needed Superman, who was she to call him home for her troubles? A best friend...a homecoming date...a first kiss. She was the sum of but a few of his most human experiences. Clark had been special to her long before the rest of the world and through their love, she became special as well. 

She realized she was holding her breathe when his lips pressed to the edge of her smile. A familair ache, enduring and bittersweet, surfaced in her heart with a violence. No matter the passage of time, she would always be his. She could talk forever and never come close to explaining her unquestioned devotion to this ONE man. Love was too small a word. 

Lana’s hands were frail and human as she reached and held his face close to hers. In quiet seconds she let their friendship heal. Something new flourished in place of the loneliness and pain. Their noses touched, her lips ghosting against his as she murmured,

“I promise to be worth it, Clark.”

Things he learned in his travelling; giving up one life to find another hurt people. Badly. The full extent of the repercussion was never quite fathomed until he was face to face with it. It was a shocking display of human nature, and a trait he’d found responsible for shaping him into who he was now. 

Part of his soul searching had left a void back in Smallville, back home, where closure was now necessary, especially after the devastation he’d wrecked on his hometown. People he knew were affected; people he’d grown up with and cared for.

Like Lana.

He didn’t know what to say; he was guilty, completely. When she had needed him, he had left. Left everything and everyone behind, just to chase a fantasy he had prayed he’d find the answers to. And he did.

But finding his answer didn’t fix what he’d broken in the first place, and he was fully responsible for the pain he’d put her in. It hurt to see her that way. 

He wanted to reach out, to touch her and assure her that he was truly sorry, but he feared doing even that. 

What if it only made things worse.

“ I,   —-you’re right. I wasn’t...I left. I left everyone, even my own mother, Lana. I did wrong by you, I did. I did wrong by everyone here, and I don’t know how to fix it.”

A couple steps forward, desperate to have her forgiveness; her understanding.

“I’m so sorry, Lana…I’m so sorry.” 

Clark wasn’t the first person to leave Smallville and he certainly wasn’t the last. Ever since they were kids he had been called elsewhere. She didn’t resent him for finding his true home. 

When Jonathon died, Clark had slept on her couch for a week. They’d watch tv in mostly silence, except for the even sound of his even breathing. They had healed together and she had always thought that one day he would shelter her the same way she had. She’d fall asleep with her head in his lap, calloused farm hands brushing through her hair. 

Her hand reached out as if she were going to stop him from stepping closer, but instead slender, pale fingers grasped at the soft fabric of his shirt. She could feel the warmth of his skin through the thin cotton, from sunlight soaked to his bones. It wasn’t until she was actually touching him that three years of heartache pressed within her chest. 

“The men on the oil rig, that lumber truck on route 66...I knew that was you saving those people, but-”

She wiped at her eyes with her free hand, swallowing over the lump in her throat. It didn’t matter that he missed the funeral or hadn’t sent a card. She’d forgive him anything as soon as those blue eyes found her. Her thumb swiped over his exposed collarbone. Lana’s kryptonite didn’t need to be chiseled out of a meteor; it was standing right in front of her. 

“-Clark...maybe I just needed you to save me.”

So far with the progress made, Clark was pretty proud of it. The Kent farm was coming together real nicely, and would be in working order before Martha knew it. Thanks to the teamwork, including Lana. When she had offered to help, Clark was slightly hesitant. After everything the city had endured during Zod’s arrival, he wasn’t sure he was quite ready to face anyone he’d known outside of his mother. She was insistent, and he would thank her for it.  Martha too. 

The day had honestly started out rather smoothly; and as the sun grew warmer, and brighter, Clark found himself more and more in tune with the task at hand, which was finishing up the shingles on the roof.  He’d puff out a sigh, and then smile down at his accomplishment: nearly finished, just a few more left…

“Almost done!”

But progress took a pause when the smallest sound of the ladder jerk, and a paint can tumbling down, which, or course, was followed by Lana. The soft yelp, and the very sensation of her body splitting down the air, heading for the ground threw his stomach in for a loop, which only served as an activation for his immediate response. 

He’d tossed his project aside; nail gun hitting the rooftop at a swift speed, but not near as quick as Clark’s dive off of the roof, and onto solid ground where he could come up from behind her just to catch her fall.

Which he did. 

Clark swooped her up into his arms, and held her tightly (though not too tight) the moment he’d had her. 

“You alright?” He asked, regardless of whether or not he’d kept her from hitting the floor. If she fell, she fell for a reason, and he reckoned he already knew what that reason was, judging by the splash of color decorating the lawn. “Well, that was a close call.” 

While the initial fall unfolded in slow motion, her mind quickly kicked into possible outcomes. What’s the worst that could happen? She could break her neck and die. Okay - besides that,-  she could break her back. A farm injury like that usually took about six months to heal. Maybe surgery. Should she try to get her legs under her? What was worse a broken back or legs?

Thankfully she didn’t have to weigh the pros and cons of crutches, A pair of strong and familiar arms scooped her up, her mind reeling to catch up with the sudden rescue.  

“All good,” she answered breathlessly with a smile, “I knew you’d grab me.” 

Her arms still wrapped around his neck tightly, as though she’d fall again if she let go. Adrenaline was kicking in, her heartbeat pounding in her ears. She peered down at the paint plattered on the grass, the green color too shiny and monochrome to be the soft blades beneath. Now that danger was out of the way, she felt like she’d wasted some perfectly good paint.  

“You really can’t get a good look at the paint job unless your flying next to it, you know?” Lana joked in an effort to cover her embarassment as such a silly mistake. Her cheeks turned pink, still catching her breathe. Her hands had begun to tremble in the aftershock, but she ruffled his hair nonetheless. It was warm from the sunlight. 

“But it’s much better with you here to do the flying part.”
