Well, that went about as well as expected.
Nels couldn’t help but wince in a bit of sympathy, but the moment they could feel the jewelry piece shatter before seeing it was a bit more concerning. So it actually was cursed... one of these days they’d love to not be right about that. Or maybe it was actually haunted and that was going to be a search and a half soon.
Problem to worry about later. Maybe.
“See? That’s why you don’t take things that don’t belong to you.” Mana dissipating, the ice slowly dissipated itself away. With that, Nels went ahead and scooped the little kit up by the scruff to set it down properly on a much drier piece of wall. “You alright?”
Definitely not, by the looks of things. So they fished a small red health vial and popped the cork. “Drink, you’ll feel better. It’s not poison, in fact I’m pretty sure you watched me buy this health poultice before all of this even happened.”
She grumbled in response; a lecture really wasn’t what she needed right now. She needed to shower off the soot, a bit of time to recover, and to forget this entire experience ever happened, not necessarily in that order. Instead, she found herself lifted into the air and didn’t even have enough fight left in her to do much more than squirm unhappily.
At least they didn’t hold her for long. She swayed slightly where she sat. Shook her head, trying to reorient herself.
She blinked, eyes narrowing suspiciously at the vial they held out to her, her gaze flitting between it and their face. How they thought she might be able to drink it like this was beyond her. With a huff, she carefully jumped down to the opposite side of the little wall. Shifted back with the always awful sound of breaking and shifting bones.
It was only a moment before a human hand was reaching up to take the vial from them, disappearing behind the wall again where she sat naked on the ground. Max gave it a sniff and took a swig, shuddering at the taste. “The fuck even was that thing?”

STAR HADN'T KNOWN ORIYA FOR VERY LONG, BUT ON THE OTHER HAND it didn't take much time at all to figure out that she was a little peculiar. it came down to the small things ── like how she was far too generous with the salt shakers they had at the diner, or the fact that she'd never heard of donna summer until ' bad girls ' had come on the radio the day before. star didn't mind at all though. there were far worse things to be than strange in santa carla.
" I DON'T THINK THEY'RE ANGRY WITH HEAVEN AT ALL, " she said. there was a soft smile on her face, and she didn't let go of her friend's hand. not even when she shook a little. " if i really had to guess, they're probably feeling pretty close to god right now ── people usually get that way in groups when good things are happening. you'd be surprised how many get converted on the beach. "
overhead, another one went off. marko called them shell breaks, but she'd always called them chrysanthemums. " it's just kids having fun, oriya. it's pretty. have you really never seen fireworks before? " all of a sudden, the hand in hers grew a little less friendly; a little more conspiratorial; star took another step toward the beach. " have you really never set them off...? "
It’s just kids having fun, Oriya. It’s pretty. Was that really all it was? Fun? Oriya shook her head, blinking at Star as she processed. “Fireworks?” No, she’d never seen them before. They didn’t have fireworks in Heaven, and she hadn’t been on Earth for very long. More of the colourful explosions happened in the sky—Star was right about one thing; they were pretty. “They’re like…how Pop Rocks taste,” she said slowly after a moment of watching.
A small, hesitant smile graced her lips as she turned back to her friend. It was still a bit startling every time one was set off, but if it wasn’t being done maliciously, if it was just for fun, she supposed that was alright. “No, I haven’t.” She followed after Star, letting her lead them towards the beach. That appeared to be where these fireworks were originating.
Part of her wondered if Star was just taking her to show her the humans really didn’t mean any harm by it. But she’d begun to learn the nuances of all the different little facial expressions and vocal tones and body language, and she was getting the feeling that this was something else entirely. “Is that what we’re going to do? Are we allowed?”

“Okay, Traveler.” Jester rubbed her hands together in front of herself, not unlike an evil mastermind. For a moment, she wished she had a cat to hold in her arms and pet while laughing maniacally, but that was, unfortunately, something that would have to wait until another day. For now, she would have to be satisfied with the hands rubbing and some evil laughter later.
“What sort of prank should we pull today, hm?” She looked to her left, up at her invisible god. “I think it should be something with a big explosion, but it should also be very funny. The best pranks are always funny.” She paused for a moment, considering, tapping the tip of her index finger against her lips. With an “oh!”, she held her finger up in the air. “And also I should get to paint something. Because I am very good at painting and the world deserves to see my artistry.”

“Wha—you can’t skip it!” Dani sounded scandalized that such a thing could even be suggested. She’d never read a comic book before, but she figured it was probably the same as regular books. If you skipped parts, you weren’t going to know what was happening later on.
That was like when Mom would read her a story book at bedtime. She’d read the first page, flip quickly through a the others saying “blah, blah, blah”, and then read the last page, before telling her to go to sleep. It always left Dani up for ages trying to imagine what must have actually happened in the story. What she’d missed.
“You hafta go back and read the rest. I wanna know what happens! We might miss something important!” She made her eyes big and wide, pouted her bottom lip, and clasped her hands together in front of her chest. “Pretty please?”

HE LOOKS LIKE A CARTOON DOG, the way he runs in the air, no ground to propel him forward. Gabriel's heart melts. He loves dogs, and then this one is so very, very special! Laughing when the pup jumps over his head, the archangel spreads his wings again, popping up a couple of yards down the path again, whistling. They play this game until they finally reach the park entrance. This time of day, most people are at work, so except for a kindergarten group on a nearby playground, they're alone. And nobody believes kids when they talk about flying dogs, anyway.
"Okay, champ." Gabriel throws the ball up and down a couple of times to motivate the dog. "See if you can catch that, alright?" And then he hurls the tennis ball right to the other side of the park.
They eventually make it to a park—a place full of grass and trees and squirrels and the occasional human. This one has multiple small humans with a couple regular-sized ones to watch over them. The little ones tend to get into messes they can’t get out of, Krypto knows. Just like little Kryptonians, though these are a lot more fragile.
His head follows the ball as it’s tossed up and down, eyes locked onto it, the rest of his body frozen where he still hovers. Then the ball is thrown and Krypto shoots after it. Doesn’t bother running this time, instead flying after the ball, his little cape flapping behind him. He catches it in his mouth while it’s still airborne. Drops to the ground and shakes it a few times, growling playfully for good measure. Once he’s satisfied, he gallops back to the strange man. He doesn’t drop the ball, but he does sit in front of him, showing off his prize, tail thumping steadily against the ground.

His years of experience in the CIA, and the several as a hunter, had trained him to notice a tail almost immediately. It was very rare that anyone-- or anything-- ever got a jump on him. So when the same face started appearing in multiple locations, he clocked it. Knew that, whether they were a danger or not, he was being followed.
By the fourth location, he had a plan made. Waiting until nightfall, he put himself in the middle of a busy part of town. Sat at a table outside a local restaurant, he sipped a coffee while working on the crossword puzzle in the day's newspaper, ever aware of his surroundings.
Finally, the hair on the back of his neck stood at attention. In his peripheral, he could see her lurking nearby. That was his cue. He finished his coffee, waved over the waiter to pay his bill, and wandered off with the paper tucked under his arm.
After ducking down a small side-street, he settled against the wall, lighting up a cigarillo while he waited. At last, he caught sight of her. He pushed off the wall and moved to a previously scoped out hiding place, and stayed still until she passed by him. He slipped out, grabbing her bicep with one hand while the other rested on the butt of his side piece.
"You're going to tell me why you've been following me," he spoke quietly into her ear. "Or we're going to both have a very long night."
In the short amount of time that she’d been on Earth, Oriya had learned something very important about herself—she ‘stood out like a sore thumb’, as the humans put it. How a thumb that was merely sore could stand out so much it became a turn of phrase wasn’t something she’d figured out yet, but the point was that she tended to gain notice wherever she went. No matter how hard she tried to blend in, she just couldn’t seem to get being human quite right.
Until one day, in a sudden stroke of genius, she decided the best way to learn how to behave more like a human would be to follow one. Watch what they did, how they acted, how they spoke. Being herself wasn’t working, so she would have to imitate someone else.
The man was chosen at random. She’d looked around, spotted him, and decided to follow him for a while. It probably would have been smarter to do so invisibly, but she’d though she was being subtle. Apparently not.
She lost sight of him. Frowned to herself as she looked for him, only to pause when fingers curled around one of her arms and a voice spoke lowly in her ear. Brow furrowing, she looked to see who had pulled her attention away from her search—she gave him a bright smile when she saw it was the very man she’d been looking for.
But he didn’t look happy. Hadn’t sounded happy either, now that she thought about it. Oriya’s smile fell away as she blinked at the man, eyes wide. “Oh,” she said after a moment. “That was a threat, wasn’t it? You’re being threatening.” Her lips twitched upwards again at the novelty of it. “I haven’t been threatened before.”
She turned towards him more, but didn’t pull free from his grip. Frowned when she saw just how unhappy he looked. “…You’re upset. Did I upset you? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. I thought you didn’t see me.”

All Star could do, and would do, was be there and listen, something she knew Sam so badly needed. Just someone to finally come clean to, the brunette feeling a massive sense of honor in that moment; the trust Sam had to have with her for this, to fully express himself. The vampire shifted a little closer, before she wrapped an arm over the youngest Emerson's shoulders when he finally finished. "C'mere," she muttered first, before going on, releasing a breath she hadn't needed.
"You like who you like, and there's nothing wrong with that, there's nothing wrong with you. Everyone has their own way they're wired...- think of it like this: you like comics, and your brother doesn't, right? He's more into sports, his bike, and you're not. That doesn't mean either of you is wrong for it, it's just... Just how you are, and it can't be helped, or changed, and it doesn't have to be," Star said, hating that he felt scared for not liking girls the way his peers did, especially in the times they were in. "You're just you, and there isn't anything that needs to change."
Star's hand lifted from his shoulder to gently brush through brunet curls, that nurturing side to her so easily coming out. "But when you're here, when you're with me, or any of the others, you don't have to worry about anything. And if anyone ever says anything to you when we're out, let one of us know, and it'll get... worked out."
He let himself be pulled in, his shoulders tense as he awaited her judgement. Because there would be judgement. He was sure of it. There always was, whenever someone suspected Sam was even just a little bit different. It even happened sometimes when they found out he liked comic books, something that wasn’t nearly as big a deal as what he’d actually just confirmed for her. Despite choosing to say the words aloud, he was terrified of how she would respond.
Out of all the responses he’d imagined, this wasn’t one of them.
Not only had she wrapped her arm around him, but she told him there wasn’t anything wrong with him. Emphasized it. Went on to compare him liking boys to his and Michael’s other interests. It wasn’t the same, not really, but it was the point she was trying to make that had stupid tears welling up in his eyes.
Setting his jaw, he tried to blink them away, his next breath shaking. Then he was turning into her, pressing his face against her shoulder and wrapping his arms tightly around her. He tried to swallow around the lump in his throat. Didn’t speak for a few moments as he worked to hold himself together, to not cry in sheer relief. “…Thanks, Star.”

I finished the show last night and I'm still turning her around in my head like a rotisserie chicken
And there it was. The burden everyone who donned a suit knew like their own breathing. The people need them. The people always need them. It never stopped. But that, too, was a lesson that had to be learned.
“Yeah, they do, kid.” He sighs. “But they're gonna need you again tomorrow, and the day after that. And you’re not gonna be there if ya’ don’t take care of yourself.” He crosses his arms and though his tone remains stern, the edges have softened, just a bit. There’s a furrow in his brow that belies a mix of exhaustion and acceptance. He’s had to give this talk so many times, over and over again. Sometimes, the target listens. Others, they don’t.
Sometimes they stay alive long enough to understand.
Sometimes.
Not always.
“I’m not sayin’ sit out forever. And I’m sure as shit not sayin’ I don't think you can keep this place safe. You can and you do. You’re goddamn Spiderman.” He reaches to put a hand on Miles’ shoulder, heavy, but mindful of his injuries. Just trying to get him to take a second and think. To take a breath.
“And that’s why they need you to be there tomorrow. If anything took you out, this place would fall apart. That can’t happen.”
He knows Logan is right. Logically, he knows that. But it’s hard to remain logical when he also knows how much danger all those civilians are in. It isn’t like he thinks the others aren’t capable of helping them, of saving them, but he knows they’d be able to save a lot more if he hadn’t gotten himself hurt. Situations like these call for all hands on deck.
And Miles has to take a step back.
He doesn’t regret taking that hit for a woman whose name he never got, he wouldn’t change that, but it consequently means he’s taken himself out of the game. If he’d been better, faster, stronger—all the what ifs fill his thoughts, even though he knows he shouldn’t think that way. It’s hard not to.
The hand on his shoulder almost makes him wince, but he manages to keep it in. Eventually pulls away and leans back against the wall again. This time, it’s less of a means of keeping himself upright as it is accepting defeat.
“…Yeah.” He shoves his mask up just past his nose so he can breathe a little easier. “Yeah. You’re right. I know that. I just…wish you weren’t.” He heaves a sigh, grimacing and gingerly wrapping an arm around himself when his ribs protest.
“I’ll just…stay here. Promise.” Something he plans on sticking to. Unless something happens close by, of course. Then he’d have to jump in and help.

Marko doesn’t freeze. Not quite. But he stops strumming his guitar. A tension slowly begins to fill his shoulders as he turns his head to look over at Lizzie. Beautiful, warm, human, alive Lizzie. Her voice is just a bit too casual for the question being asked, a little too innocent. Like there’s something hiding behind the words there. Something with more intent.
He doesn’t like it one bit.
“Why do you ask?” he deflects. He doesn’t want to accuse her of anything. Doesn’t want to assume. Not yet. But he has a very bad feeling that he knows exactly where this question is leading, and it’s not anywhere good. Not for her.

If @bettertelepath was to enter Lucy's mind, what would it be like?
Lucy has “spiders” in his brain. That’s how he envisions the voices he hears. For regular verse Lucy, he basically has a direct line to hell in his brain, and the voices he hears are various demons telling him all the bad things he should do. I haven’t quite decided how this translates to his X-Men verse yet. But Charles would basically see the biggest, creepiest spiders you can imagine just all over the place, everything in Lucy’s mind absolutely covered in spider webs. The spiders reach everything, taint everything, if Lucy lets them, and they can be so loud and insistent that sometimes it’s hard not to let them. Other than that, his mind is basically a haunted house. That’s the vibe and that’s how he likes it. Dark and spooky with ghosts and dead things around every turn, all while classic rock songs play in the background.
