Several specimens of Cornus controversa 'Variegata' (wedding cake tree, variegated table dogwood, pagoda tree) were acting as focal points in the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley, Surrey, Uk. This small deciduous tree has a distinctive, tiered habit and the leaves have broad margins of cream that turn yellow in autumn. The plant needs a well-drained soil in sun or partial shade.

An old specimen of Styphnolobium japonicum 'Pendula' (pagoda tree, weeping Chinese scholar tree, syn. Sophora japonica) makes a large shrub with a characterful trunk and would look great with its pendulous branches cascading from a higher terrace over a wall. The new branches have a green bark and deciduous pinnate leaves. In summer there are scented creamy-white, pea-shaped flowers.

We saw this specimen while on study tour in Budapest, Hungary, with students and staff from the Masters courses in Landscape Architecture and Garden Design, as we were fortunate to have a great plant tour with Krisztina Szabó of Szent István University campus.
