The rainbow wires help Sebastian spot any problems. If they're blinking, dim, or out completely, it might mean something is loose or broken.
The Echoshell clothes he's wearing were Sebastian's uniform before he was experimented on. He modified the sleeves to have buttons since they didn't fit over the thick forearms Painter has. There's also buttons in the back so the shirt doesn't get caught on his head.
However, painter can only wear the clothes in cool environments as it blocks off major ventilation routes for some of his systems. He might wear said clothes to keep his system warm in colder environments too.
The scarf was originally Sebastian's, and the beret was made with excess fabric from the scarf.
Painter didn't always have a body. When his creator was murdered, he had been working on a body for painter, which was unfinished. Echoshell took the parts in and ended up keeping them in storage.
Sebastian discovered these parts and realized they were Painter's, so he finished building the body for him after getting Echo Station locked down. Painter usually has his body unless Sebastian is doing maintenance on it.
Echoshell called him Scribble. This is because they equated his art to an annoying mess of colors that they considered scribbling, and because he wouldn't stop creating when he wasn't supposed to.
Painter will often be in the shop, but due to lack of camera and turret signals there from some of Sebastian's interference tech, he has to go back to his generator room to fully run everything.
The cord tail can be used to charge the body during maintenance. However, Painter has an auto-charging system and does not need an active power source to stay alive. (His creator implanted one. Not even Echoshell can figure out how it works)
The long antenna that almost act as ears are receptors. They help with sound, signal, and also just look cool.
The squiggly ones? He glued those to himself, he just likes those. About 99% sure Leon made them as a joke and Painter just liked them so much they're part of him now.
The screen on his chest is a secondary display where he can show off his art if he wants to! He can still do it on his face but it basically gives him a decorative chest piece.
His thicker parts are to hold extra wiring and keep him balanced.
Also, he has little wheels in his feet. He can skate around.
TRIGGER WARNING: DEATH, VIOLENCE. ONE OF SEVERAL TRAGEDY ROUTES
So in the eventual game, I plan for there to be modes where you can play as different types of characters. This is the idea I have for the soldier gameplay.
(in the actual version, you would be able to choose a merciful version of this!)
(I'm realizing I didn't mention the video game here. Yes we have @attiplayz as our lead game dev, we currently don't have the resources to make the full on game but it will be separate from Roblox entirely!)

You have a job to do.
Not everyone has come back from this. It's a risk, but it's one you're willing to take.
After all... Sebastian injured and killed so many of your coworkers. You, one of many soldiers, have the honor to avenge them.
But when you get down there, you meet Leonis. You remember seeing him around as others were tasked with training him and teaching him. He aims his gun at you, telling you, "you don't want to do this."
You don't understand how Leonis could be so attached to the monsters that kill in cold blood. He was always so kind. And now he holds the gun to your head?
Orders come through. "Knock him out. Do not kill." HQ says this urgently, "Tie him up and grab him on the way back if you can."
So, overcome with your anger, you manage to disarm him. Stomping on his tail to keep him from moving too far before slamming your own gun against the back of his head. When he falls, you grab zipties off your belt pouch and make sure his hands are tied behind his back. You move on.
When you reach the shop, Sebastian is asleep. Extremely lucky, as others have never encountered him like so.
You can end it now. But you see a picture on the desk. One where he's... Human.
He's smiling, and he's with two others. You realize slowly that it's his siblings, before the Solace Project commenced. Leonis is small, and Vanessa is giving bunny ears to the two. A wave of understanding hits you like a train.
Are they monsters? Or are they trying to survive? Who is really in the wrong here?
You can spare them. Or, you can follow orders.
Today, you let your anger win.
You remember all the faces you'll never see again.
"It's me or you."
But before you can pull the trigger, a voice yells for sebastian to wake up. It's Painter, over the glitching walkie talkie.
Sebastian quickly rises and swipes at you, but you're prepared. You jump back and start shooting.
There's not much room for him to dodge. Bullets hit him and he yells, but it's not enough to take him down.
The fight lasts forever, or so it seems. You don't go down easily, and neither does he. Especially with the adrenaline PATH is providing you to keep you up.
This is the closest anyone has ever been.
You manage to swipe something off the desk- and it turns out to be a smoke bomb. The shop fills with smoke, and your mask keeps your breathing easy. Sebastian on the other hand, he coughs as he mistakenly inhales it. He lost sight of you. You take the chance and pull out your knives, jumping at him as he turns around.
Your knives dig into him, deep. He roars in defiance, trying to get you off, but you've already cut deep and long. He collapses as you finally get off, gripping at the long, bleeding wounds.
For once, his voice sounds afraid. Complete and utterly afraid. "Wait- I have a family. Please don't-"
You shoot him in the head before he can finish his sentence. His lights flicker out.
Painter is screaming over the walkie. Begging for Sebastian to respond. Saying he's coming. He'll help.
You need to leave. You run, and when you pass the area Leon was in, he's gone. The ziptie broken on the ground.
PATH speaks. "Turrets are back under Echoshell control. Personnel are cleared for safe passage."
Turrets fire far behind you. You hear metal falling, crashing into the ground.
You make it back to the surface.

Leon scrambles back to the shop. He heard the screams. The cries. Like visions in his head.
One room in front of the shop, he finds painter. His screen shattered and holes through his metal chest. His wires are sparking and his chip... has been shot straight through. The turret above pays no mind to Leon.
He screams at the sight of his dead best friend. Painter was like another brother to him. And they took him like he was just another piece of metal.
His eyes widen when he realizes that Sebastian hasn't come out of his shop. He runs in.
Blood is pooled on the ground. His brother is gone, a lifeless body snaking on the floor.
He screams again. He cries. His agony bloodcurdling, scaring even the toughest entities in the halls. His family is dead. And it was your fault.

You're getting your injuries taken care of in the med bay. They're celebrating you, you did it. You did the impossible. Not only did you kill S-13, but you took down the computer with him even if by mistake.
When they finally give you space, you look at your own hands. Was it worth it?
That's when the lights go out. Alarms go off. You quickly gear up again, wincing a bit as you grab your gun and your knives.
The large metal door creaks. And then it glows.
Claws rip straight through the inches of metal. Sparking and tearing their way into the room.
When the door is ripped open, Leonis stands there. Patterns of lightning down his skin. His eyes a small cyan dot in the pools of black.
"YOU."
"YOU KILLED THEM. YOU TOOK THEM AWAY FROM ME! I TOLD YOU NOT TO DO IT! I'll fucking KILL YOU!"
He shoots towards you, still flowing brightly as he attacks. Ripping at your wounds. You don't stand a chance. You weakly grip your knife, stabbing blindly.
When he finally lets go of you, it's too late. You feel yourself slipping away. Leonis is collapsed next to you, gripping at the stab directly at his heart.

So I was looking at the designs in comparison and thought it was funny how he's evolved
Last July, before I was even 18, I made a design of Painter with a body
You can see some of these elements in his new design. Especially the chest screen, the antenna, tail, and beret. Even the rainbow theme!
However you can also tell I sucked ass at drawing robots and just drew a human as robotic parts lmao
When making his new design I also took inspiration from his surroundings and from the idea that he's an artist. He loves color, so I incorporated it in his wires and face, especially since they have relevance for Sebastian to know if something needs fixing.
But genuinely the difference is insane. I also much prefer the simplified face I've given him, and I feel like his body has a lot more depth now. Like I still suck at drawing robots but I've definitely gotten better.
Overall I took inspiration from my own past design and the community as a whole. I've always loved the way that others have designed him to have thicker arms and legs, something about it gives him an almost artistic flow through his entire body, despite how rigid his head is as a rectangle.

Roy is going to essentially be the dark mode version since he was Echoshell's attempt to replicate painter. HOWEVER, the personality difference is where it really gets fun. I can't get it out of my mind that Roy has a duck obsession and often displays more "childish" behaviors when he's content and safe (he will be playing with rubber ducks with Painter because how could anyone resist Roy's sad face)
However please keep in mind Roy is not a character I plan to infantilize. He will be complex and have layers just like Painter or even the human born characters. I'm especially projecting some of my own symptoms onto him, especially with the aspects of regression I deal with.
Currently neither Painter nor Roy have canonical ages and I'm working on how I wish to attempt that since I very rarely write robotic characters.
Also, fun fact; Roy wasn't planned. He happened because I found a rainbow brush and traced over painter's face. Eureka moment much? He did very quickly gain lore before I could say "haha just a silly joke"
I know these two don't have the most complex designs (er, I guess Roy doesn't have a finished design at all, he's like. A sketch) but I think you guys will really like PATH. She's based off Glados to a certain extent and the person drawing her official design has made her look SO cool. (He's on break for making a cosplay; so her release won't be out for a bit!)

Overall I'm very excited to share more. I've been on a small break myself especially since I have to also make a cosplay for a movie in June, and there's been a massive heatwave as well.
I've been scheming on the Sebastian redesign number 2, with help from @medkitwaffles who drew a gorgeous sketch after some discussion about ideas. If you have anything you'd like to see in the Sebastian redesign, please let me know! I'm currently planning to keep his dark blues color scheme with cyan, however, so he does have a pretty stable color scheme.
He's also going to be more dragonic this time because while that was originally the plan he didn't feel dragonic enough to me, even though a big chunk of his DNA will come from one of the dragon spirits that will be extremely plot relevant.
Leonis, because of this, has been paused since I really don't know where to go with his new design, since he was heavily based off Sebastian's appearance originally.

HOWEVER:
Sea bunnies have also gotten some work!
While they will remain similar in design, they will be very diverse, and have plenty of openings for fan designs of the little goobers. I'd actually like for the game to have a customization option for bunnies (as I'd like every player to have access to one, for free!) where you can change the features and colors and even give them little hats. However I'm not sure if that'll be too complex so we'll see lmao
Here's some sketch ideas I've created, they're awful but it was just to gain ideas
The single drawing of the one with wings is actually done on the Leon redesign sheet because it's his pet Sea Bun, who's name is Moth... So of course I have to give it moth wings!
The last one is a waffle sea bunny, inspired by a drawing I saw on Pinterest where somebody drew a regular sea bunny with a pancake on its head,, I'm going to give it different colorings based on the waffle flavor and the droopy ears are like maple syrup!
The jackalope type one will have different antler sizes and potentially hooves as the same person designing PATH drew the most adorable sketch of one with hooves (if he allows me to refine around that idea I'll 100% implement it!!)
The cat one was just because I thought it was kinda funny. Cat? Bunny? Feral rodent? Who knows!
We also had a lot of accepted suggestions for fan domestic species and will be working with the creators + adding them to the team if they continue to help with the species!
