Description

Frédéric Bazille was in his mid-20s when he executed this startlingly direct self-portrait. Depicted against a dark background with only his palette and brushes to indicate his profession, he looks at the viewer as if caught unawares. The unseen easel and canvas must be located immediately in front of the artist and to our left.

Description

The painting shows five women who embody the arts. Painting is sitting by the easel at the centre of the composition. She has turned towards Poetry, who is standing behind and who provides her with inspiration. Sculpture is sitting at front left and gazes admiringly up at Painting. Architecture and Music have retreated into the background. The Roman artist Batoni also illustrates the supremacy of Painting within the arts with his refined, almost classical-looking style, which disguises every brushstroke.

Biography

This expatriate artist living in Britain enjoyed a stellar reputation and was often compared to another Gilded Age artist, John Singer Sargent. Supported by the patronage of Queen Victoria, [James Jebusa] Shannon enjoyed commercial success that brought riches to his family. After a lucrative career and a fashionable existence spent gambling in Monte Carlo, motoring in his Rolls Royce, and entertaining friends, the painter was knighted in 1922, the year before his death.

Aleksander Kokular

Aleksander Kokular (9 August 1793, Warsaw – 6 April 1846, Warsaw) was a Polish painter, art collector and teacher. He was one of the co-founders of the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw and a prominent Freemason. Portraits (contemporary and historical) and mythological scenes were his specialties.
