Saving Face

Every year in Pakistan, many people – the majority of them women – are known to be victimized by brutal acid attacks, while numerous other cases go unreported. With little or no access to reconstructive surgery, survivors are physically and emotionally scarred. Many reported assailants, typically a husband or someone else close to the victim, receive minimal punishment from the state.

I just watched this documentary. I was aware of these horrible attacks, but seeing these women fight for their protection and seeing them fight for women to be valued enough in society to warrant harsher punishment of their miscreant husbands, it just made me sob uncontrollably. I am thankful for people like the doctor in this film that try to do what they can to make the victims of these atrocities feel better about themselves. He cannot repair all the damage done, but what he does is enough to give these women hope and foster the healing process for both body and soul.

Navy Seal Team 6 in wee hours of Sunday shot and killed Osama bin Laden in a fortress-like compound.  The compound was around one kilometer (half a mile) away from the Kakul Military Academy, an army-run institution for top officers and one of several military installations.  It was built in 2005 at the end of a narrow dirt road with "extraordinary" security measures. The compound had 12 to 18-feet walls topped with barbed wire with two security gates and no telephone or Internet service connected to it. It raises questions over whether Pakistani security forces knew the whereabouts of the world's most wanted man. Hmmm…ISI safe house anyone??
