Archovember Day 17: Pakasuchus kapilimai
Pakasuchus (or “Cat Croc”) is another small terrestrial notosuchian from mid-Cretaceous Africa, this time from Tanzania. It was only around 20 inches long, and unique in its strange mammal-like appearance. It had heterodont teeth, a catlike skull, a doglike nose, and reduced osteoderms. In fact, Pakasuchus is so confusingly mammal-like, that paleontologist Greg Buckley says that if only its isolated molars had been found, they would have assumed it was a mammal!
Pakasuchus was probably an herbivore or an insectivore. It would have been quick and agile, darting through the underbrush, perhaps filling the niche of modern day weasels. It lived alongside fellow notosuchians like Rukwasuchus, titanosaurs, turtles, small mammals, and lungfish.
