I meant to talk more about DA2 here sooner, but I got caught up in just playing it.

There are so many companions! Sometimes it was difficult to choose them. Also they were all hot, would sleep with most of them. 

I missed out on an actual romance because I slept with Isabela once and we were like "it's just this once" but then for the rest of the game I couldn't romance anyone else. Or really take it farther with her. Probably my one regret in the game. I really wanted to romance Merrill. 

I love Merrill, I feel so protective over her. I almost always had her in my party, usually with Anders, and with a rotation of Fenris or Aveline most often. And they were all dicks to her during the casual walking dialogue, Aveline was the nicest but even she would come out with something mean to say sometimes.

Anders really got on my nerves. What kind of high ground does he think he have to constantly attack Merrill for pursuing blood magic to help her people? She never used it to hurt anyone (she was desperate and that made her foolish, the outcome was tragic, but Marethari's decision was not Merrill's fault). Meanwhile mages in Kirkwall are using blood magic left and right to murder people and Anders is like THEY WERE PUSHED TO THIS! THEY SEE NO OTHER CHOICE! WE MUST HELP THEM! Then he goes and tells Merrill she's worthless and should be dead. I hate him.

Fenris is hilarious to me. It took me two days to realize I was listening to Gideon Emery, probably because I've only ever heard him speak in an Australian or Russian accent before. Made the mistake of saying something pro-mage to his face and he hated me until I tried fixing things in Act 2. Me: has a pleasant and friendly conversation Fenris: [+5 rivalry]

Fenris is basically Derek Hale. Skinny Derek Hale with a slouch. Broody and grumpy and great at holding grudges, insists on squatting in a derelict mansion he won't fix up.

Not that I begrudge him his, uh, grudges. He was a slave. Danarius was a fucking creep and talking to him made my skin crawl. But the Imperium isn't Kirkwall, or Ferelden, mages are not powerful and respected here and he didn't need to go around telling Merrill she didn't deserve to live. Geez. 

How do people get mage!Hawke to romance him? I can't imagine.

On that note, I was in LOVE with being a rogue.  Everyone please accept fem rogue!Hawke into your lives.  I'm gonna be really tempted the next time I play it to be a rogue again, but I do want to see what it's like to be a mage. 

Anyone else notice that Merrill had pink nail polish? Do you think Isabela did her nails for her? Do you think the three of them had slumber parties at the Hawke estate? 

Isabela taught Merrill how to do body shots. This is canon. Please alert me if there is fan art of this.

How guilty was I when I gave Aveline Shield of the Knight Herself and she threw it in my face that I had sold her husband's shield? I felt like the game sucker punched me; I'm used to a certain disconnect between gameplay and story. I felt so bad. But it makes for a good, sad story. Hawke and Aveline selling the shield when they first arrive in Kirkwall and  they're hungry and living in the slums. They've been through so much together.

Obligatory Dragon Age 2 blogging:

I can understand why everyone has a strong lovehate relationship with this game. The design is so weird after Origins. Why does the interface have to look like that? Everything's ... blocky and roundabout. It reminds me of all the tumblr updates to make everything look all ~modern~ and ~cool~ when nothing needed to be changed that drastically. Why is a tiny half-invisible sidebar preferable to a solid banner on top?

And the graphics ... strange. I had to go from high to medium just so that everyone didn't move as if they were swimming in molassas. 

Anyway, I'm playing as female Hawke, because obviously. I love her preset design. I am gay for this Hawke. 

Also I named her 'Seraph' without knowing people would be calling me 'Serah Hawke.' That's kind of funny.

VERBAL DIALOGUE!!! I MISSED THIS!

I decided to play as a Rogue, partially because I find a lot of tactical advantages in being able to switch to a powerful ranged weapon, but mostly because I'm extremely fond of of the fast, dirty, dance-battling combat the dual-wielding blades offer. 

Turns out that you can't switch weapon sets in battle like in Origins!!!! Hooray!!! The only way to do it is to pause, go into the inventory, manually set the weapons up and go back. No more one-key changeovers. This renders the ability to switch weapons entirely useless, so I haven't used my a bow at all. At least Varric fills that void. I'll specialize him in archery and just have to get my hands dirty.

I!!! Love!!! Kirkwall!!! I love cities! Urban fantasy > boring as fuck rural European fiefdoms!!!! This is the setting of my dreams!!!!!!!!

I love the plot. Whatever it is. Much less traditional quest-based fantasy (despite the billion quests). Just you, a poor refugee in a strange city, trying to make a new life for yourself and work your family out of the slums. And accidentally getting in way over your head.

I installed a mod to change the walking animations to male Hawke's, because I was tired of that ridiculous hip-swaying trot, like she was about to fling herself hip-first into a wall. I also tried to install some cool evolving armor, but with no success. I followed the instructions but idk. I'm bad at this. 

I'm about to try my luck at a mod to give Isabela pants, because the fact that she's literally running around in a shirt and a thong is driving me crazy.

More to come on the companions. So many companions.
