The Northern end of Long Lake is perforated by the longest navigable siphon tunnels in Palau. Scuba diving into them at high slack tide is a dangerous affair, but paddling through them can be a life threatening gamble. The tidal equilibrium last only 30 seconds, before a wave of tidal water comes rushing through the subterranean system, pushing the kayaks perilously close to the hydroid covered ceiling. Calvin Idek Leidich may be the youngest Palauan to have ever paddled (age 6) and Scuba dove (age 10) through this treacherous set of siphons. Why take such massive risks??? The tunnel system is a subterranean highway for Ochaeo (Spotted Eagle Rays), Ruetuu (Marbled Reef Ray), Rull (Feather Tail Ray), Ius (Crocodiles), and a host of reef fish. Once inside the lake, the diver / snorkeler is rewarded with the sight of some of Palau’s oldest & most colorful corals. Honestly… who could resist? . .
