A prominent Gazan doctor detained and tortured by Israel has told his lawyers he believes he is about to be killed
" A prominent Gazan doctor detained and tortured by Israel has told his lawyers he believes he is about to be killed. Dr Hussam Abu Safiya’s lawyer, Nasser Odeh, shared his grim prediction over the weekend following a meeting with him at Nitzan prison.
The paediatrician “was brought to the meeting shackled by his hands and feet and accompanied by masked prison guards," Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) said in a statement based on the lawyer’s affidavit. "He bore fresh, severe injuries to his head, around his eyes, and on his ears and neck – to the extent that his lawyer initially struggled to recognise him. "
During the visit, Dr Abu Safiya experienced difficulty breathing and speaking continuously. He appeared extremely weak, struggled to sit upright without falling, and on several occasions seemed on the verge of losing consciousness." The doctor “expressed grave fear for his life, stating: 'This is the last time you will see me… They brought me here to kill me. I don't see myself surviving. This is the end.'"
PHRI added: "Based on these direct observations, attorney Odeh concluded that Dr Abu Safiya's life is in immediate danger." In March, two UN experts called for the doctor’s immediate release and said he had been subjected to “severe torture” in Israeli detention. Abu Safiya was snatched by Israeli forces in late 2024 after a siege at the Kamal Adwan hospital, the facility he was in charge of at the time.
Israel has systematically targeted hospitals and medics as part of its genocide in Gaza. "

Remembering an old Sheikh Hamza Yusuf lecture - he recalled a Christian theologist who had philosophised that all the 7 deadly sins were perversions of virtues - for example if we think of wrath, we must remember that anger is absolutely necessary if we want to establish social justice.
To add, Dr Elmasri is a Psychiatrist in Gaza ❤️ - seeing his hurt and anger expressed on social media is heartbreaking but it reminds me that the correct response to oppression is anger.
The anger of Palestinians is righteous and just. Some may even say it is sacred.

the latest update:
Salam everyone, I apologize for the lack of updates over the last several months. I was busy taking the bar exam, so I haven't made time to update. I am still in contact with Dr. Moath Abu Samra almost daily and he is doing as well as could be expected for someone in his position.
Moath and his mother are still in Cairo, Egypt with Basim. Sadly their visas are set to expire and Egypt will not renew them. So, last month, Moath used some of the funds to apply for a visa to the Sultanate of Oman where he has some contacts. It is unclear how long this process could take. At this time, he has sent in the application. I am also doing research to see which American visa would be most efficient for he and his mother to apply for.
In the meantime, his brothers Yousef, Ahmed, and their father are still trapped in Gaza. We are praying everyday for their safety and that they are able to evacuate soon. We have purchased a Nomad eSim for them in the hopes that they can at least stay connected with the rest of their family. If you would like to donate an eSim to their family, please contact me directly through a private message.
Thank you to all for the collective efforts and the continued donations. It is my sincere hope that the rest of Moath's family will be able to evacuate Gaza soon. 11 months of torture is 11 months too much. Thank you again! ❤️
Before banning the three-day Palestinian Congress gathering, Berlin police raided it and shut off the electricity. Organizers believe Germany's antidemocratic authoritarian approach to Palestinian movement is worsening by the day.
