I unwittingly fell in love with three series one after another, each having a blond, charismatic protagonist with horrific childhood and buttloads of trauma. Feels like destiny.
Saezuru Has Always Been About Yashiro's Right to Self-Determination. Chapter 66 Might Threaten that Narrative:
I'm going to say this and I know it's going to piss some people off, but I really don't care. There's been some dismissive and downright insulting attitudes toward anyone who's dared to express disappointment with the latest chapter of Saezuru, and the worst part about it is, these dismissals in general fail entirely to understand what the criticism is even about. It isn't that anyone thinks Kamiya or Amou's words or actions are out of character or nonsensical, or that anyone is accusing Yoneda of bad writing. I certainly haven't and I haven't seen anyone else do so, either. The disappointment and the unease is coming from the potential for the latest chapter's developments to endorse a message which undercuts the entire dramatic journey of Yashiro's character. Now I'm not saying that's what's going to happen, only that the way the events unfolded in chapter 66 conveys a sense of it being a possibility.
I don't think I'm alone in having expected, after chapter 64, for Yashiro to come to the conclusion, on his own, that Doumeki still loves him, and that in itself being enough to convince him to spurn Misumi's orders, and to ignore the threat of Tsunakawa's retribution to go to Doumeki's side. That would have made plenty of sense with Yashiro's character, given his consistently self-sacrificial nature. Whenever anyone he's cared about in the past has been endangered, Yashiro has never failed to put himself on the line for their sake. So I don't think that was an unreasonable expectation to have. And it would have been the perfect culmination of Yashiro's self-actualization and a powerful statement about the importance of agency and self-determination. Instead, we got Yashiro being guilt-tripped into going to Doumeki's side, being treated by the other characters as if his trauma and reasons for pushing Doumeki away were both secondary to Doumeki's loyalty and, worse still, framed by the narrative as selfish in comparison to Doumeki's devotion. Now, I have no idea if that's what Yoneda is actually intending with the way things played out here, and given what an amazing writer she is, and how incredible this story has been up to this point, I'm going to say I doubt it, and I'm more than willing to wait and see what's actually going to happen before I pass judgement. But I still think it's fair to be unhappy with the turn things took in this chapter, and to be nervous about the potential turn the story might take if, say, there's no actual consequences to Yashiro's agency, once again, being undermined by the other characters in the story. If nothing negative happens as a result of all this, if Yashiro and Doumeki are able to simply ride off into the sunset together and live happily ever after, then the narrative is essentially pushing this idea that Doumeki was right for treating Yashiro the way he has since the start of the time skip, and that would be a serious problem, because Doumeki was never right for treating Yashiro the way he did, and in fact it wouldn't be any sort of exaggeration to call it emotional and mental abuse, and even sexual abuse. With Doumeki's confession at the end of chapter 64, we finally got acknowledgment on his part to that fact. That he's been mistreating Yashiro is a desperate attempt to hold onto him, and I assumed, as did others, that this was the moment when Doumeki finally understood that it's Yashiro, not him, who gets to decide if Doumeki gets to be in his life. It was the narrative highlighting the vital importance of Yashiro getting to make that choice on his own, and underscoring in the process the wrongness of Doumeki's behavior in trying to force himself into Yashiro's life. But now we've got a situation where Doumeki's devotion is possibly being framed as entitling him to Yashiro's love. Again, I'm not saying that's what happening, but it feels like that's what's happening with this latest chapter, and so it understandably upset some people who are particularly invested in Yashiro's journey toward self-realization.
I said this in a reply, but if Yashiro were a woman, people would be viewing the events of this chapter in a decidedly different light, I think. If Yashiro were a woman who had a history of sexual trauma and abuse, and who hadn't been allowed since the age of 19 to live for herself, then Amou's and Kamiya's words and actions would have come across as abusive and manipulative and controlling, all for the sake of a man who, let's face it, has shown stalker-levels of obsession with Yashiro. It would come across as creepy and also as undermining toward Yashiro's well-being and safety. It would be a bunch of men telling a woman that her safety is secondary and unimportant in the face of a man's feelings. Again, as I've repeated multiple times, we can't know how this is going to play out, but if nothing negative results from this, then the story is framing Doumeki's actions as "right" while framing Yashiro's actions as "wrong" and "selfish", and I would absolutely have a problem with that.
Because Yashiro never owed Doumeki his love. Doumeki's loyalty never has and never will entitle him to Yashiro's life. His actions toward Yashiro since the time skip have been manipulative and controlling, and there has to be some sort of price to pay for that. Doumeki shouldn't be rewarded for treating Yashiro like shit and lying to him because he couldn't accept Yashiro's rejection. The other characters telling Yashiro he's a terrible person and that he owes Doumeki his love because Doumeki loves him doesn't change that fact. If the narrative decides to frame Doumeki's actions as right, it won't change the fact that they were objectively wrong.
But like I've said, we'll have to wait and see if that's what's actually happening. I trust Yoneda enough not to undermine her own, central themes in an attempt to placate the fans who only seem interested in Yashiro's and Doumeki's love being consummated, regardless of how that consummation comes to fruition.
After suffering the most mind boggling day of the entire sad life.. Yashiro my baby YOU DESERVE THE WORLD 😭😭😭
Happy birthday Yashiro!! 💛💙
These words aren't predictions, they're just jumbled thoughts I'm sharing to discuss them. We can't predict what Sensei will bring us, only guess right or wrong, and she always surpasses our highest expectations with something surprising and spectacular.
So I'll call this:
Yearnings for the immediate future.
In chapter 66, we left off with that passionate kiss. My most immediate wish is that this time Yashiro will finally give herself to someone he loves. Now that he has no more doubts about Doumeki's feelings, nor about him own, the sadness and harshness of volume 8 are behind him, as are the fears and despair of volume 9. While each encounter brought them closer, they were filled with doubts, fears, and secrets on both sides. Yashiro couldn't express what he truly longed for from Doumeki, and Doumeki fought with all his might not to show himself so in love, for fear that Yashiro would run away from him. But now, none of that remains. Doumeki confessed absolutely everything in chapter 64, and Yashiro, who had already understood his own feelings but was unable to give them voice, opens a door that had never been touched before.
I wonder if Sensei would give us that: a scene of them making love, truly making love. Without interruptions, without trauma, without fear. Of two people who yearn for each other physically and emotionally. I would like to see it. Yashiro taking the reins this time, undressing Doumeki, desiring him, kissing every inch of his body. Yes, please, Yashiro, play with those sensitive nipples (I'm going to sound like a pervert, and I won't apologize for it). Giving him oral s3x, I miss seeing that Yashiro melting with desire, with that sensuality that could ignite even the sun. I would like to see Yashiro on top of Doumeki; after all, Doumeki has a gunshot wound, so he wouldn't be able to move very actively. A while ago, I drew Yashiro and Doumeki making love in the lotus position, which is the most romantic position in the Kama $utra. Gazing, embracing, caressing, their heart lines aligned. If Sensei would grant us something like that... Can you imagine? Oh beloved Goddess Yoneda, hear our fervent pleas from an audience that loves you. Amen.
I'd love to see Yashiro like that; I think Doumeki would cry, and we would too.
My other thoughts revolve around what will happen with Kai, Doumeki, and this whole mess.
There are many pieces on the board, not just Doumeki. The resolution of Doumeki killing Kai and going to jail seems so obvious that I doubt we'll see it, but you never know with Sensei. So, here are my crazy wishes: I'd like Nanahara or Kamiya to take on that responsibility, and here's why:
In Nanahara's case, we know he's a Yakuza with a heart straight out of a movie. He believes in loyalty, family, honor, and duty. He longs to be part of a group, to be that Yakuza from an '80s movie. It's his conviction. But, as things stand now, that's not possible. His loyalty lies with Yashiro, yet he has never stopped communicating with Misumi.
On the other hand, there's the sense of duty and guilt. He was the one who ordered Doumeki to cut off his finger; he couldn't protect Yashiro, and Yashiro lost an eye. And then there are the recent events: Nanahara didn't protect Yashiro in front of Tsunakawa's house. If it hadn't been for Doumeki, who risked everything, including his life, to protect Yashiro, then he wouldn't have anyone left to call President. That bullet was headed straight for one of our beloved protagonist's vital points, and presto, Saezuru is finished because of Nanahara (just kidding). Nanahara must feel immense guilt and be grateful to Doumeki, and we see that in chapter 66, he's desperate for Yashiro and wants to help Doumeki. I admit it bothered me to see Nanahara saving his own skin instead of being vigilant and protecting Yashiro. But he's a man who cares; he carries every mistake with responsibility and torment.
If Nanahara decides to kill Kai and go to jail, wouldn't that guarantee him a position within the group? He could be rewarded, but that would definitely be the end of his relationship with Yashiro, but then Doumeki would be left to replace him. It's a scenario I'd like to see, and without a doubt, Nanahara would become a hero to us all for protecting our beloved main couple.
But what if it were Kamiya?
He desires a promotion within the group, and he's said so in the past: he wanted to be promoted alongside Doumeki. He's also a Yakuza, but based on past events, we've discovered that his sense of loyalty also lies with Doumeki. He genuinely cares for him. If he reports to Tsunakawa that Doumeki couldn't kill him due to incompetence or anything else, he would still be excommunicated, and Kamiya would go to prison for the honor of the group and to fulfill his duty. Upon his release, he would be recommended for his long-awaited promotion. Kamiya, who has no one, would become the unexpected hero protecting those who have earned something. Doumeki would be forever grateful and could be with Yashiro without any burden on his shoulders.
It would truly be surprising, and liberating, for Yashiro and Doumeki's right-hand men to make this kind of move. I'd love to see these scenarios. It would be sad because, yes, one of them would be locked up for a while. I imagine Yashiro visiting Nanahara in prison, and that puts me in a good mood. Yashiro would feel responsible, but it's heartwarming.
And the third and craziest of all is that Inami grabs Kai, 😂🤣🤣🤣🤭 This would be truly insane, but I don't think so, I don't know. We'd have to thank someone we deeply hate, and if that happens, the author would put all their readers in a contradiction, a sadistic move on her part for all her masochistic readers. I'd have a lot of fun with this possibility.
After so many years here, Saezuru is a part of my days. My life has gone through so many changes in recent years, but they are a constant. Sometimes I get depressed thinking about when all this will end; I wish I could always have them. I hope I never lose these friends that Saezuru has given me, that we can continue making fan art for life and talking about them for many years to come. But I also hope my heart doesn't break. I want Yashiro and Doumeki to be happy, just like everyone else. They deserve it, we need it. In the end, this story belongs to Sensei, and she'll know how to conclude it, but yes, I want the rain to stop and the dawn to smile upon our beloved protagonists.
And you, what theories do you have? Do you like these scenarios?
