I think ultimately one of the biggest reasons why people don’t like Shane is that you can’t fix him like befriending/marrying him doesn’t magically stop him from being depressed/alcoholic and ngl I think it kinda ruins the idyllic idea that some people have in their minds that once you have friends/are going to therapy/slowing down on the alcohol that every little problem you have goes away forever, that or some people view him as ungrateful that you spent so much time and effort into being a support system for Shane just for him to not be better, and that is a much worse point of view in my personal opinion because Shane (and Pam) are both good examples of how real people with real traumas, bad coping mechanisms, and mental health issues behave and ngl how many people view Shane and Pam is really telling of how they view mental illness in real people and how many people think that mental illness is smth that can be solved/cured instead of what it really is that being smth you gradually get over and figure out how to cope with
