“Come on Pam, you’re tense. Just have a glass.” Gretchen urged her friend, wavering the wine in front of her head tauntingly.
“I can’t. I need to get this done, Sunset.” Pam responded, ignoring the drink and looking back at her work.
“It will still be there tomorrow! And besides, you are not even on the clock. It might be better for you to take a night off.”
“Are you just gonna keep antagonizing me until I cave? Isn’t that a little messed up?” She spoke back, almost bitterly.
Gretchen glared at Pam, dropping the drink to sit on her knee.
“Oh. So it is okay for you to pressure me to do all of these things you want to do, but when I am trying to help you feel better, I am the worst person ever?”
“That’s not what I said--”
“That is what you mean, though.” Gretchen spat back fast.
There was a long pause in the moment, both girls felt the tension rising.
“You have been working on this project for so long,” Gretchen’s sharp voice turned around, becoming more sympathetic as she looked at Pam with a worried glance. “I feel like it is consuming you. I never have time to talk to you anymore. You are always so focused on how to fix the portal. I see how much it bothers you and I just want to help you. I miss you.”
Pam lifted her hand away from the holoscreen she was working on and froze as she heard Gretchen talking. Her face growing a slight tint of red.
“I miss how we used to talk all night long, how we used to just spend hours looking up at the stars.” Gretchen slowly moved her open hand to move towards Pam’s, making her jump slightly.
Pam looked over at her longingly.
“I…” she began to speak before looking down and holding her necklace close to her. Her eyes squeezing shut for a moment before looking back up at Gretchen, moving her hand away. “I’m sorry, Gretchen. This has to be done.”
Gretchen glared back at her, holding back the tears she felt coming along and stood up.
“Fine.” Her voice went back to the bitter taste they originally had as she walked out with the glass. “Don’t think about calling me for a while, Pamella. I am not going to answer.”
As she finished her remark, she slammed the door shut, leaving Pam alone in the now quiet room. She looked towards the door for a moment before turning back to the holoscreen and continuing her work. She could get some work now that Gretchen had finally left her alone.
