Atergatis integerrimus Lamarck, 1818
The evil crêpe of death and decay!! Made with the necromasses and toxins of the reef.
Atergatis intergerrimus, more commonly known as the red egg crab or pancake crab, is a species of toxic Xanthid crab found in reefs. They accumulate toxins like tetrodotoxins and saxitoxins from their diet of carcasses, poisonous mollusks and algae, making them incredibly toxic and can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning if digested. With basically no natural predators these nocturnal crabs tend to move slowly amongst the reef, unbothered by my diving flashlight.
This is an adult A. integerrimus, their juveniles are much more famous on the internet(child celebrity) as they heavily resemble pancakes.
Red Egg Crab - Atergatis integerrimus
This pancake look-alike is Atergatis integerrimus and does not have a given common name. However, I propose that, given the appearance of the crab, we should start calling it a 'Pancake Crab'. One unfortunate thing is that it does not taste like pancakes; in fact, it is poisonous and should not be eaten.

Juvenile Red Egg Crabs with a Brown Carapace with a White Margin.
Description
Atergatis integerrimus has a body width of about 8 to 10 centimetres and is about 1.6 times broader than long. The carapace is large, oval, and somewhat egg-shaped with a smooth edge. The bodies of adult red egg crabs are reddish brown, orangey to bright red, usually with scattered white spots. Juveniles, on the other hand, have a white margin around a brown to light-brown-coloured body.
The pincers are rather large and both about equal in size, and are smooth with black tips that are spoon-shaped. Males may have larger pincers. The walking legs also have a mostly smooth surface.
Biology and Mating Behaviour
Members of the order Decapoda are mostly gonochoric, meaning that the crabs are either male or female.
In Atergatis integerrimus precopulatory courtship ritual is common before mating, primarily through olfactory and tactile cues.
Distribution, Habitat and Diet
The red egg crab occurs in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific.
The Indo-Pacific biogeographic region.
It is a reef-associated crab, found at depths between 0 and 30 metres, but usually somewhere between 0 and 10 metres. Here they occupy rocky and sandy bottoms, where they can be found under rocks or in crevices at low tide.
Atergatis integerrimus is known to prey on tridacnids, which is a genus of large saltwater clams.
Conservation status
This crab is listed as 'Vulnerable' in the Red Data list of threatened animals of Singapore.
