Once more, due to annual popular demand, we like to share Rosa Parks’ pancake recipe on National Pancake Day. Jotted down on an envelope, it came to the Library along with the rest of her papers, a gift made possible by the generosity of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation in 2016. Featherlite Pancakes Sift together:

1 C flour

2 T B. Powder [presumably baking powder]

1/2 t salt

2 T sugar

Mix:

1 egg

1 1/4 C Milk

1/3 C peanut butter melted

1 T shorting or oil

Combine with dry ingredients Cook at 275° on griddle

Масленица в Никола-Ленивце 2026. «Горящее сердце»

Тема и одноименный арт-объект Николая Полисского отсылают нас к легенде о Данко. Герой Максима Горького вырывает сердце из груди, превращая внутреннее сияние в реальный огонь, освещающий путь людям.

Его поступок — квинтэссенция самоотверженной любви, бескорыстное желание отдать всего себя ближнему. Именно этому стремлению — делиться пламенем своего сердца — мы посвящаем Масленицу 2026 и огненную скульптуру, которая создается прямо на наших глазах в соавторстве со стихией.

16 разновеликих башен символизируют деревья — темный лес из легенды. Повинуясь сюжету и замыслу художника, в нужный час над ними, словно в руке Данко, поднимется метафорическое сердце. И загорится, указывая каждому из нас путь из дремучей чащи и позволяя соавтору-огню рисовать свои узоры.

Мы не сжигаем сердце, а зажигаем в нем ту самую, необходимую для горения, искру. И вместе проживаем появление, короткую жизнь и исчезновение огненной скульптуры — с горящими сердцами.

Carnival in Nikola Lenivets 2026. "Burning Heart"

The theme and the art object of the same name by Nikolai Polisky refer us to the legend of Danko. Maxim Gorky's hero rips the heart out of his chest, turning the inner glow into a real fire that lights the way for people.

His act is the quintessence of selfless love, a selfless desire to give his all to his neighbor. It is to this desire to share the flame of our hearts that we dedicate Carnival 2026 and the fire sculpture, which is being created right before our eyes in collaboration with the elements.

16 towers of different sizes symbolize trees — the dark forest from the legend. Obeying the plot and the artist's intention, at the right hour, a metaphorical heart will rise above them, as if in Danko's hand. And it will light up, showing each of us the way out of the dense thicket and allowing the co-author, the fire, to draw his patterns.

We don't burn the heart, but we light the spark in it that is necessary for gorenje. And together we live the appearance, the short life and the disappearance of the fiery sculpture — with burning hearts.
