What would everyone's favorite flavor of milkshake be? [Also no "ketchup-flavor" one for Sans, that's cheating ;) ]. As an aside, I think Gaster's would be cookies&creme, or coffee.

Sans: Hot dog. Heyyy, I did what you asked! It’s not ketchup! ;) Sorry. Sans is a canonical troll. You’re going to get a troll answer here, too.

Alright alright alright FINE. If you want something slightly non-trollish… then coffee. With Sans’ tendency to fall asleep anywhere and everywhere, I imagine he’s someone who requires caffeine boosts to be halfway functional. He’ll have developed quite the taste in coffee.

Toriel: Snail. Okay okay okay come on. You KNOW it’s snail. It’s so snail flavored milkshake. If she loves the taste of snails so much that she even bakes snail pie, there’s no way I’m doubting she’d drink a snail milkshake, too.

Papyrus: Strawberry. When I first played Undertale, I imagined Papyrus’ first milkshake at Grillby’s being chocolate, for whatever reason (I think that’s because it’s my prototype milkshake flavor). But maybe it was strawberry? For sure, I feel like Papyrus would enjoy the taste of a milkshake that comes from something perceived “healthier.” He’s not someone who enjoys greasy or unhealthy food. Strawberries are going to give you a lot of sugar, but they’ve got a bit of a “healthier vibe” than, say, caramel or coffee!

Undyne: None. She doesn’t like milkshakes. Undyne doesn’t like cold food - she even has a specially constructed refrigerator to keep things warm (why was she “cooking” a popsicle, then? maybe it’s an exception?). Undyne also explicitly states she doesn’t like ice cream multiple times. For instance, in the phone call from room_fire_hotelfront_1, she says:

Oh yeah, that reminds me.I told RG01 and RG02 that if they managed to nab you...I'd take them both out for ice cream.I hope you were able to avoid them.Cause I HATE ice cream!!

Then, when you call Undyne in room_water_nicecream, she says:

Ugh, ice cream!? Sugary... COLD... Talk about GROSS.Now this chilly pink stuff that Alphys makes me...THAT rules!!! 

 I'll also drink it if it's heated up.

I’m not sure what the “chilly pink stuff” is, and I haven’t seen any convincing explanations on what it is from other speculators. We do know that Alphys makes ice cream with seaweed, as she explains on her date, but it’s up in the air about whether or not Undyne would eat it. On one side, Undyne obviously dislikes ice cream. On the other side, Undyne might eat something she normally wouldn’t because she has a crush on Alphys. In that case, if Undyne ends up liking it, she might not call it “ice cream” out of stubbornness. If somehow Alphys’ “chilly pink stuff” is strawberry ice cream, then maybe Undyne (getting over her stubbornness) could like a strawberry milkshake.

Now if Undyne were someone who liked cold food and had the potential to like a milkshake, I would have normally picked chocolate, being as we know Undyne likes to drink hot chocolate. But since she so adamantly talks about hating ice cream, and milkshakes are made from ice cream, she probably doesn’t like milkshakes.

Alphys: Caramel. Alphys canonically eats a lot of junk food, what between the soda and the instant noodles. Soda tends to give people a bit of a sweet tooth, and I feel that would be the case with Alphys. So for a milkshake, I imagine that Alphys would want something deliciously unhealthy and sugary sweet. You can’t get much sweeter than caramel. I also imagine her liking banana, though, for whatever reason.

Not to give too many flavors... but since she also makes “chilly pink stuff,” we could again say strawberry is something she likes. Or raspberry. I guess sometimes pink flavor is raspberry.

Asgore: Cookies and cream. I feel like he’d enjoy lots of milkshake flavors, though. He’s not picky. He finds them tasty.

Frisk: Cinnamon or butterscotch? XD Hehehehe. Sorry. Couldn’t resist. It’s probably something like caramel!

Chara: Chocolate. Does it even need to be said?

Gaster: Depends what sort of Gaster we’re talking about. Is this Gaster in general as depicted in canon and/or the widespread creativity of fandom? Or is this like, my fic Gaster? Being as I know you know “my Gaster”, I guess I’ll answer for him? You’re right. He would like cookies and cream. He’s also a really big vanilla guy. That’s usually what he orders. After he orders everyone else’s milkshakes. Without asking them what they want. Because he already knows what they like. And he’s going to do it and no one is going to stop him.

I guess you’ve also seen me badly draw Gaster with a chocolate milkshake.

River Person: Cookies and cream. Yes I’m including River Person. Something nice, sweet, and and almost “child-like”. They hum and sip on the milkshake at the same time.

So, per always, @pandamerium and I got away with our headcanons and a guilty ship and started narrating to each other an Undertale Halloween.

Every year Mettaton wears a costume that shows off his awesome legs. Sexy barmaid? Totally up his alley. This year, he’s dressed up as a magical girl with an impossibly short skirt, in solidarity with Alphys, who is of course also wearing a magical girl costume.

Napstablook feels discouraged and consequently doesn’t choose to wear a costume. But when they get encouraged to do something for the Halloween, they grab a blanket and dress up as a ghost.

Bratty and Catty are Hocus Pocus style witches.

Asgore is dressed as a puppy.

Toriel usually picks something dorky for Halloween. When she becomes a school teacher, she dresses as an apple one year. Another year, it’s a pencil. She’s also done things like a game card (back when she was married to ASGORE, it was a queen. “Get it?” I’m a queen!”).

Sans usually doesn’t do costumes but Toriel does get her way one year. She appeals to him with the idea, at least. They go as a ketchup and mustard duo.

This year, Alphys, Papyrus, Undyne, and Sans are hanging out carving jack-o-lanterns. Papyrus carves a detailed, artistic masterpiece of a pumpkin. Sans just guts his and sticks his head in it.

And then he can’t get his head out.

They eventually have to get Undyne’s enormous anime sword. Papyrus isn’t too worried - he trusts Undyne - but Alphys is major time freaking out. BECAUSE ALL OF A SUDDEN UNDYNE IS WIELDING A GIANT SWORD AND AIMING IT AT SANS’ HEAD. Alphys was sorting candy, but she runs off and scatters it. 

Frisk is standing faaaaaaar out of the way.

Once Sans is freed (somehow without head lopping), the group heads to Grillby’s.

Grillby is Ghost Rider. Leather studded jacket. He’s all out. He looks amazing, intense, and hot.

All the customers are floored by it.

Sans, meanwhile, has just walked in the door. Sans sees Grillby. He just stares. And stares.

He still has pumpkin guts on his head and his shirt. Those are sticky, after all. They’re hard to wipe off. And it’s not like Sans is a neat freak anyway.

Papyrus is still going on and on about how Sans should have been more careful. Sticking his head in places that get him into trouble.

Sans does not register his brother’s comments. He is still staring. Frisk waves their hand in front of Sans’ eyes. It’s totally not registering.

It takes Undyne to break Sans from his reverie. Sort of. Undyne notices the goo goo eyes and slaps Sans on the back to jolt him. Just makes Sans way more nervous. For once in his life, he actually jumps.

Does having such a smart, calculating villain like Viggo explains Hiccup's behavior in HTTYD2? He kept pushing for Valka and Stoick to "reason with Drago" and "maybe he can be reasoned with". Is it possible that could potentially clue us in on where RTTE is headed? Because we see Hiccup getting increasingly frustrated with fighting Viggo so I feel some logical reasoning would have to have him mellow out again for the 2nd movie. Would that be lazy writing, if true??

Augh, it’s always so interesting to speculate how we could tie the characterization of Hiccup between RTTE and HTTYD 2! I hope that Hiccup’s final experiences with Viggo help lead into the psychological mindset Hiccup exhibits in the second movie.

You’re completely right that Hiccup is getting increasingly frustrated with Viggo, to the point he’s becoming almost more violent and dark at times, rather than more pacifistic. It seems like (for an optimal writing of RTTE) there has to be something that undercuts his current emotional trajectory. Otherwise, wouldn’t Hiccup be more suspicious and hostile to a newcomer in HTTYD 2 times? Why try to reason with someone like Drago when he’s been in constant conflict with dangerous people like Viggo?

My suspicion is that RTTE will not end by reasoning with Viggo. When Hiccup and Viggo talk, Viggo brings in a lot of deceitful pacts with Hiccup. For instance, what Viggo and Hiccup are doing at the start of Defenders of the Wing Part 1 is “reasoning” with one another by offering a pact. But as we see, what Viggo is actually doing is deceiving Hiccup and tricking him into a plot. This sort of experience, where Viggo tricks Hiccup while pretending to speak logically in reason, might not make Hiccup so happy to jump on reasoning with his adversaries. If anything, it might make him wary to build pacts or trust someone’s “reasoning” words.

I think that something else would bring Hiccup’s character turnabout and fuel his devout ideal to reason with Drago in HTTYD 2. I suspect it has something to do with Hiccup’s increased experience with violence over the years. It comes to a point where Hiccup is Done with violence and is steering away from it. He’s become so disillusioned with what violence has done (and has become increasingly capable of handling situations without using Viking violence) that he turns to the ideal of reasoning.

I wrote an analysis on Hiccup’s current characterization (which is potentially slightly outdated now), but one thing I’ve noticed is that Hiccup gets placed into situations that are increasingly unable to be solved with physical force. It’s not that he reasons with creatures like dragons, but he finds ways to stop a problem through something that isn’t very violent. Throughout the franchise, Hiccup goes from someone who thinks like a Viking and solves problems with violence, to someone who increasingly thinks there can be alternate solutions. A good compare/contrast is how Hiccup handles a dangerous Skrill in Defenders of Berk versus Race to the Edge. In the latter event, Hiccup finds a much more peaceful and less negatively impacting solution for the dragon.

Now, in the midst of Hiccup learning that more peaceful solutions can be successfully reached, he runs into Viggo. He gets emotionally drawn into a battle of wits, and this battle of wits makes Hiccup become terse and brooding. It doesn’t do good things to him. He’s more willing to engage with Viggo, more willing to clash with the dragon hunters, more willing… perhaps, in the back of his mind… to enact violence than he would otherwise. When Hiccup is the most upset about Viggo (RTTE S3 Ep 1 “Enemy of My Enemy”), Hiccup even lashes out and shouts, “I’ll kill you!” to Dagur’s face. This ordeal has not been doing the best things to Hiccup’s mindset. 

I like the idea that Hiccup runs into some walls confronting Viggo. And that this sort of violent path (let’s admit it, though the youths aren’t killing the dragon hunters, there are a lot of violent engagements) brings negative results. Hiccup sees the bad effects that violence can bring - both to his own character, and to the people around him. I moreso like the idea that there’s an impact Hiccup feels losing Dagur on his watch, that there’s an impact to Hiccup seeing his friends go through violent experiences… and this making Hiccup step back and reconsider how to approach an antagonist. Since he’s had such bad recent experiences with violence, he’s going to turn to reasoning because it’s TOTALLY going to be better than what happened in his past. Or so he thinks. 

So if Hiccup gets to a point where he’s had ENOUGH of violence because he’s seen how bad violence can be, he can make that one eighty degree turn and seek reason, reason, reason, peace, reason, avoid war, reason by the time of HTTYD 2. By this time, he’s lost someone on his watch (or, if Dagur’s still alive, at least THOUGHT he lost someone on his watch anyway). By this time, he’s had enough experiences where nonviolent solutions have made their mark (since the progression from HTTYD –> ROB –> DOB –> RTTE –> HTTYD 2 has involved increasingly nonviolent solutions to problems). So what does Hiccup think? “Hey, nonviolence is more effective. It’s less harmful. It’s the way to go.”

That’s ideally how I would do it or piece it together, of course. I think that could sufficiently explain how Hiccup would mellow out from RTTE to HTTYD 2. It makes sense for Hiccup to do this. He’s reacting to mistakes he’s made in RTTE and prior times where violence has come to bad ends. But he swings like a pendulum, overcompensates, and in HTTYD 2 tries to promote reason at times that it’s not possible.

Whether or not the writers of RTTE actually tie it up this way, or think to tie up his characterization with HTTYD 2 times, is yet to be seen.

Still, let’s say that Hiccup’s idea “we should reason” comes from reasoning with Viggo. I don’t think logical reasoning would be lazy writing. Hiccup has already experienced conclusions with enemies through peaceful pacts - the most notable example being Alvin the Treacherous at the end of Defenders of Berk. If it is done well, logical reasoning can make a good ending. 

Personally, I think the story might do best if we have a middle route. Hiccup doesn’t defeat Viggo through face-to-face reasoning, but he doesn’t defeat Viggo by killing or harming him, either. There has to be a middle ground where Hiccup cleverly thwarts Viggo, outsmarts him, doesn’t kill him, but gets his adversary off the competition. If, for instance, Hiccup can completely knock the dragon trade out from Viggo, Viggo’s done.

Actually, originally, I just went with shades from John's godtier palette. ouo It's evolved a little since then, but the general feel is the same to aim for. If you go off in any direction but stay true to the feel, then by all means go for it.
