Pandeia, Dragon's Oath
Τετάρτη Μεσοῦντος/ Τετρὰς ἐπὶ δέκα/ Τεσσαρεκαιδεκάτη, XIV day From today's sunset: fourteenth day of Elaphebolion. Megala Dionysia- theatrical competitions, tragedies - end of the celebrations. Full Moon: celebration of the Pandia - "Pandia, a festival of the Athenians...in honor of Zeus." (Phot. s.v. Pandia; Harp. e Suda s.v. Pandeia). The fact that the festival is said to be also in honor of Selene (Full Moon) and of Zeus altogether, can be understood from the fact that Pandia (or Pandeia) is said to be the daughter of these two Gods: "Selene has conceived and gave birth to a daughter, Pandeia, incredibly lovable among the immortal Gods. "(HH 32). However, the sources (Eth. Magn. and Anecd. Bekk. I 292) associated this celebration with Zeus, with the Full Moon and Pandeia, and finally with Pandion, the eponymous Hero of Pandionidae (cf. also IG II² 1140). The fourteenth day of each month is called "the most sacred" because "(Hesiod) praises the fourteenth day both as the day of the opening of the jars and as the best of all; in fact, the lunar light is rich..the moon reaches the middle of the total distance into which accomplishes her journey...since in the middle, in relation to the circle, perfection is found..."
