paneelmaja (Estonian)
I have this page of snippets from my sketchbook that I used in this print series titled Pressure in 2023, but which I drew in 2020 while planning out some intaglio prints. I've lived in panel buildings (paneelmaja / хрущёвка / plattenbau) my entire life and I don't really mind it. it's where I feel at home. after childhood, I no longer had aspirations of becoming royalty living in a luxury mansion. that's an ideal we all grow out of.
but some people do still consider it a symbol of poverty or even shame, when frankly, life in blocks of high-density affordable housing is part of the utopian future where we have prevented further climate catastrophy by moving to sustainable living. we should all be getting obnoxious and preachy about struggling with poverty or "symbols" of poverty.
here's a good parallel: vegans can get obnoxious, but it's rightfully obnoxious preachiness stemming from anger because the meat industry is fucked, unsustainable and actively worsening climate change. every poor person, every working class person should also get obnoxious because while this life is rough, this life is sustainable. the life that the upper class leads has never been sustainable.
Escapement Complex
Interactive digital experiment with the GameMaker engine (1280×720px) 2023
A group project, made in two days at Tallinn University during the GameMaker game jam on 9-10.12.2023. Our team happened to consist of just me and my two artist friends Ellis and Anni. None of us had used the GameMaker engine before, so we barely got it done. The theme we were given was “free at last.” We wanted to ask “what about after freedom?” The game story is that you play as a lab experiment who escaped and this is your freedom – unexciting life in a panel building with some other escapees, like a new prison. I designed the player character and did the pixel art direction.
Player character: (placeholder?)
Anni: @4nnih6 They teach game making at TLÜ and did the programming for this, putting it all together. Ellis instagram: @ellis_bug He has partaken in so many game jams!! He came up with the lab part of the backstory, plus various character designs.
Here's a presentation about the game, which shows off more assets, including some things which didn't make it in. Hallmäe / Grey hill is an alternative title for the game, referencing Mustamäe and other panel building areas of Tallinn.
besides stickers, there's a few prints and zines I'm selling this weekend at J-zone / J-tsoon. screenprints, digital prints, and some acid etching and lithography prints.
I don't want to price them over 10 eur tbh. idk, should I? do they seem more valuable than that? they're just sitting around in my drawers lol

Pole sellel madala keskklassiliikme elul viga ühtki, jah euribor on kõrge ja parkimiskohti pole ja rotid ja.. ma unustasin ära millest ma rääkisin.
huh I didn't like how those screenprints came out at the time but now that I've had some space from them for a while, they're pretty cool
