The PanelxPanel One Shots Kickstarter is live!
All four books are sure to be great - I’ve only read the Liefeld one (which is very good). And my own ;-) - but I’m mostly here to promote my own book “Style and Substance - An Exploration of Themes and Craft in Young Avengers.”
It’s about Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson, Clayton Cowles and a bunch of great guest creators. It’s one of the very best comics of the past decade and one of my favorite comics ever. The thing that makes Young Avengers so damn good is how the creative team uses the comics medium to reflect the major themes of the book. They employ formalist tricks to show the heroes’ quest for something new, their need to reinvent themselves. The heroes of the book (especially Wiccan and Loki) want to change who they are (“IWishIWasSomeoneBetter”) and it’s brilliantly reflected in how the story is told, as the comics medium is constantly pushed further, to daring new heights.
Basically I look at how Gillen/McKelvie lie when they say “Style > Substance”, as it’s clearly “Style = Substance” The book is really good. Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou did an amazing job designing it. It’s a great read both for fans of the book, of the characters, the creators and perhaps most importantly of comics and how the medium works. I hope you’ll pick it up!
