Easy Japanese! is a lot like Duolinguo (which sadly doesn’t have Japanese). Good for learning nouns, numbers, simple sentences -- and also writing, if you want. I find it addictive.
Learn Japanese phrasebook is a simple app that just lets you listen to and favorite travel phrases for easy reference.
Human Japanese gives really helpful detailed info about the why and how of pronunciation and writing, but is probably more detailed than needed for quick travel phrases.
I’ve also been listening to podcasts: Survival Japanese Phrases -- very helpful! -- and JapanesePod101.

who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter
Kipper’s the hunter. Kipper doesn’t want to be a hunter, but they’ve got this thing in his neck and they’ve made him hurt things and he just wants it to stop, stop, stop... But they send him out anyway. He’s scared and he doesn’t want to do this and he misses Dr. Finch, who taught him how to build a campfire and who toasted marshmallows with him and who’d protected him--but Finch is dead. He got killed by something and they want Kipper to go out and kill it. You already know what “killed” Nico...
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman
Kipper is the mermaid, damn straight. Nico catches him in a net and Kipper just says HI all excited because !!! an actual human!!!! SO EXCITING TELL ME EVERYTHING. He’s lucky it’s Nico that found him and not any of the others Nico used to work with; there’s rumors about what they do with the more exotic creatures that periodically find their way into the nets. Nico, for his part, is more than a little enamored.
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar
Nico’s the witch. He’s not a particularly good one, at least by some standards. He’s a poor healer and an even worse offensive fighter, but he’s decent when it comes to making salves and growing things. Kipper’s the familiar. He’s best described as a dog--though dog he is not--in terms of friendliness and behavior, but there’s something just slightly off about his presentation that leaves some people staring curiously. (It’s not the pink fur, no matter how off-putting that might be. It’s harder to pin down than that.)
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict
Once again, I’m seeing this as slight canon-deviation? Nico’s gotten himself a job at a coffee shop because they didn’t ask too many questions and he doesn’t have to offer much in the way of credentials. Kipper comes in one day, shivering and obviously looking for him. Nico gets him a coffee--with chocolate syrup, remembering that Kipper loves sweets more than anything else--and that, as they say, is that.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm okay okay I’m. This one’s hard. Because honestly (and don’t laugh) the only person I can see as a prince is Linus, brooding and easily upset and largely unwilling to leave the castle, with Matt as his favorite knight and lover. (Linus keeps waiting for Matt to admit that he’s just using Linus for the throne, even though he knows Matt’s better than that, better than he deserves, but it’s fucking complicated and why does he have to be this way??) I kind of feel like witch!Nico and familiar!Kipper would join up in this ‘verse. Otherwise, I guess prince Kipper and knight Nico? Maybe. Sort of.
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent
Again okay this is hard because I really really don’t like the idea of either of them having children. I’m going to skip this one because it’s kind of grossing me out and I don’t know why.
who’s the writer and who’s the editor
Kipper is the writer. He writes children’s books, the kind that win about eight million awards. He writes them for himself, really, because the charming little stories make him feel better and safe in a world that seems entirely Unsafe. Nico, his editor, is kind and understanding and sits with him when everything is a bit Too Much. Kipper loves him, a lot. It’s okay because Nico loves him too.
