A note on the Panguni Uthiram celebrated in Kumbakonam

The scorching sun notwithstanding, as typical of the summers, a large number of devotees make a beeline to the Sri Subramnaniyaswamy Temple at Kumaravayalur, 95km from Swamimalai, Kumbakonam, on the occasion of Panguni Uthiram’ festival every year during the month of March.  

Most devotees here carry milk pots or “Paal Kavaadis” walking by foot to the temple from many places to fulfil their promises to Lord Muruga. 

There are special alankaram and abishekam performed to the chief deity in the morning. 

The Valli Kalyanam is held at the Subramnaniyaswamy Temple as part of the Panguni Uthiram festival. Security is usually beefed up at the temple during the festival. 

The Panguni Uthiram festival is also celebrated with great religious zeal and fervour at temples in and around the town of Kumbakonam.

The ornate idols of the deities from Sri Kambatta Viswanathar Temple and Sri Nageswarar Temple were carried to the banks of Mahamagam Tank for ‘theerthavari’.

Likewise, The ornate idols of Sri Swaminatha Swamy of Swamimalai Temple have carried on the golden peacock ‘vahanam’ or vehicle that is brought to the River Kaveri for performing the Panguni Uthira ‘theerthavari’.

The idols are then taken back to their respective temples upon the completion of several rituals on the banks of Kaveri and at the Mahamagam Tank.
