More under cut!!
So this lovely gem is my darling Panocha, one of many characters I hope to post for Disability Pride Month!!
Panocha named itself after its favorite dessert: a delicious chocolatey pudding that always made the frowns go away. While completely nonverbal, Panocha is avidly expressive in a multitude of ways! When not miming, she much prefers to sign; knowing American, French, and Black American Sign Language!
When I made Panocha as a character, I wanted to really talk about those who were often pressured or otherwise felt like it would be easier to make their disabilities into a form of entertainment, especially among Black women. Panocha is autistic, catatonic, and somewhat schizotypal. It does not enjoy loud and sudden noises, bright and flashing lights, or anything particularly colorful.
Panocha wears contacts to keep its eyes from hurting much, and plugs her ears to muffle most noise around her. It’s unorthodox, some may argue, but subtle, and that’s the name of the game!
Look out because I have big plans for this character as she pops up in my other works!
In reference to the Panocha slang ask, I think it would be funny if they had a clown counterpart named Chupa; in reference to the candy brand Chupa Chups very popular in Latam, but also it being slang for "to suck off" in certain countries.
Panocha has a skunk named Sylvester and a goat called Chupa!
I find it interesting that you named your mime Panocha. Because here in LATAM it can be used as a crude way to say vagina.
Was it intentional as a second secret meaning because she is lesbian?
LOL!
I called her Panocha after the pudding because I thought it was a cute name. Panocha pudding is traditionally eaten during Lent and Panocha is like,,,culturally Catholic as well. When she was younger, she was obsessed with the dessert, and eventually just started eating it on a daily basis. Eventually it became her namesake.
The first time I unveiled her someone also told me at the time (they were Mexican btw!) that it’s a slang word that can also mean “pussy” and I thought that was hilarious.
So I think it’s a bit of both now because I think the name “Pussy The Mime” is campy af. It’s a raunchy joke the mime in question would make, and who am I to deny it?
