This is - legitimately - my favourite delivery of Shakespeare I have EVER seen (and I have seen some good-ass productions yo, in the Globe Theatre itself even). Like seriously, even though the words are unchanged, he’s stripped away ALL of the archaic pretense and assumed grandeur of ~presenting the bard~ that makes even the most wildly talented of actors and innovative of productions inherently inaccessible to a modern audience. Like, they’re still great, they can still communicate the message and (some) of the nuance, but they’re still always a step removed from being identifiable to any viewer’s lived experience. They’re still always reciting 15th century poetry. But this guy? This guy is like, screw iambic pentameter, to hell with being precious about the material, HOW WOULD AN ACTUAL PERSON SAY THIS SHIT?

Like this. And it’s beautiful. It’s beautiful to hear a soliloquy I loved so much already, and have it come to life in a way it never, ever, did before. I feel like I grasp his motivations, his twists and turns, no longer on an academic level but on a visceral, instinctive one. Because he’s presenting his mental and emotional journey in a way that speaks honestly, like a real person.

So yeah, this shit post? I love it. Deeply and sincerely.

I'm a little confused on what is going on, I've only played through two "loops" (?) so far, but I think I might be figuring something out! I love Elise with all my heart. I found the scene where we get to see things from her POV while watching the sea outside. The little details that imply the different perspective were so fun to see: Elise sees colors while Nanno doesn't, the names are different... and it was just so pretty in general. I haven't seen much of the game yet so I might be misinterpreting, but I sense themes of abuse, memory issues caused by a bad mental state, and unfulfilling relationships to many different directions. Can't wait to play more! Oh and question: Does Nautical Nightmares take inspiration from Slay the Princess? I see several similarities with that VN, but I'm not sure if you've played that one

What made you create Nautical Nightmares? What was your inspiration for it? It looks really good and I can't wait to play it :]

Well a large bulk of my inspiration is that I wanted to see POC represented in different art styles across history, to show that we were always here and will always continue to be here. I wanted to make a game that I'd enjoy playing, with all the aesthetics and guilty pleasures that I'd have fun drawing and writing about.

I used to roleplay a lot when I was in middle school and high school (still do but I stick to my close friends haha) and I hopped through a lot of different fandoms. If I told you where this idea started it may shock you, but let's just say it went through A LOT of changes. It took a lot of work to unpack the ways roleplaying through Discord had stunted me. I was a black queer in fandom then, and I'm still a black queer in fandom now.

I took inspiration from a lot of sources initially: Danganronpa, Persona, Undertale, just to name a few. But when I realized I actually DIDNT have to play by the rules of those predecessors with what I could talk about and how I could represent my characters....oh it was over.

genuinely and whole heartedly dont understand why jax wasnt taken out from his abstraction. not only does this make the majority of the film entirely redundant, as in, he abstracts in the first 5 minutes offscreen, and everything until caine appears fails to progress the story in any helpful means and even worse sacrifices time that could have been used neatly wrapping the rest of the cast up. The only point I disagree with people on this issue is saying Jax is excused for his actions by killing himself. I absolutely see how this can be read but I want to give goose the benefit of the doubt with her choice of Jax's final dialogue being "i dont want to leave"

so, i am left to assume that at his last moment, his admission of wanting to stay would therefore imply his desire to open up and reconstruct the foul identity he created for himself. the reason for his very morbidly depicted abstraction, with him in nothing but terror, regret and groans as his body dissipates to his abstraction, kindddd of? loosely??? has a compelling link to i have no mouth and i must scream?

but of course, the fact that this is the resolution to that 30 minutes of screentime, that jax eventually recognised his need to live, is just so utterly wasteful. and the easiest way they could have salvaged it would be by simply cutting to a shot of zooble ripping both pomni and jax out of his abstraction. thats all it needed. this would at least justify why they depicted him so antagonistically in his mind prison, and why there had been any focus on him in the first place abstracting.

while i dont agree with caine's pretty much factory reset i could forgive it if it would mean jax was there to witness it. if jax got to see himself as leroy, an actually growing person, it would have been the perfect open-ended conclusion to his character learning he can still change even if he has failed all the way up to this point. it would have placed such a neat bow in his story , but while i still think this entire storyline could have unfolded differently had he never abstracted to begin with, this is the most frustratingly simple way they could have solved it so the narrative became clearer.

all the finale accomplishes is rewriting jax's intentions in the story so everyone rooting for him to change are punished as he is canonised as someone too far gone. such underwhelming writing, especially with how his character DOES show signs of changing, he was an asshole in 5-6, but genuinely was behaving and far less hostile with the gang from 7 onwards. he was not irredeemable. and most importantly, he did not deserve to escape his consequences.

honestly, its such a simple fix that part of me deleriously hopes the leaked film is a 'bad ending' variant and the theatrical release will have a different version of the last 15 minutes. it seriously just does not narratively make sense as it currently is, goose hasnt written this poorly in the whole series. why now at the finale?

I’m allergic to giving Gooseworx the benefit of the doubt. You see, I no longer have much to doubt.

The reason why people say that Jax’s death absolves him from his actions is because it reroutes the plot to mourn him rather than discuss the aftermath of what he’s done. We see this when Gangle is able to muster up tears for his abstraction, and also the fact he has a literal shrine fort dedicated to his abstracted form. I need you to think about that. Kinger couldn’t do that for his own wife, but he could do it for Jax.

The scene of the cast seeing their IRL selves thrive is also proof of this. They only truly relax when we learn the fate of Jax’s counterpart (fcking Leeroy god 😭) and see that he is happy. Literally “saving the best for last”. Despite the fact the only version of him they’ve known has been a relentless serial abuser…they are somehow able to connect with this figment of him. It’s demented.

Moving on, the phrase “I don’t want to leave” COULD be seen as an attempt at him wanting to make amends, but it can just as easily and more comfortably be applied to the larger narrative which is that he’s just selfish. Of course he doesn’t want to leave, he always has to be in the narrative, he always has to be there to receive. Considering that abstraction is irreversible, I’d probably say that too in my last moments.

The writing decisions of TADC did not just begin to crumble in the finale. As many people have already stated, Jax has been hogging the show for a minute. Most plots that had been set up quickly became riddled with holes, and the dialogue was always questionable. A lot of exposition and empty filler to take up space. While aggravating in the earlier episodes, it’s damning when we take the finale into context. Mind you, Gooseworx already stated multiple times this was intentional, so I see nothing wrong in slamming down the hammer.

Personally I’m not interested in discussing the concept of redeemability when it comes to Jax. It would be something if this discussion could be had with someone like Kinger,,,the only person who wasn’t a victim to him, but it isn’t. It’s had with all the people he fantasizes about hurting. That’s a power imbalance and it’s hardly fair to them. Maybe they’d have been able to express that if the narrative didn’t have such a chokehold on them,,,

Dear fellow Black People and other people of color who are likely insecure in their interests and are always the butt end of jokes, racism, sexism, and more,

I know that with the media all around us being largely anti-black, how we are often not represented at all or greatly misrepresented by the media around us that we tend to cling to the things that we like, even if it isn’t exactly the best with us in mind or even good for us.

From those of us who still love books and bands and movies and shows that have people who have showcased that they don’t care for us or people that look like us, how they show that they really only care about our money and the exposure we give them with our anger, our pain, and so many other emotions that we are usually only ever flamed for… for we cling to what we thought we could trust and what we hoped wouldn’t betray us like the rest. I’m not here to tell you what you should feel or how you should react when something new and horrible comes to light about someone we thought would be good to us. You can be angry, sad, numb, indifferent, or whatever. I’m someone whose reaction is very rarely anger first you see. It’s always betrayal, pain, sadness, shame for wanting to believe in the people around us, and dejection for me, and nowadays it’s a numbness with a lack of surprise.

“Oh of course that was anti-black. Why did I hope otherwise.”

A sad and angry acceptance that the people around you really don’t acknowledge the damage that they do to people like you and me just by being who they are and doing what they do. Maybe some of you don’t care that this is happening, choosing to sink further into your escapism so that you do not have to face the damage that these things do—wanting to ignore the broken glass shards shredding your feet whilst still walking on them. Maybe you’re hurt, blindsided by this thing that has been a huge part of your life not being at all what you had initially assumed and hoped that it was. Maybe some of you are angry, the fire, the cold and the heat it offers, roiling under your skin, begging to be let out because you’ve seen on many many many occasions these things hurt you and those around you. You’re tired, you’re angry, you’re bitter and you’ve simply had enough. To those of you of the latter, what I say next is something that you likely already know, something you likely already practice, and I thank you for being alight when the rest of us are still stumbling about in the dark, blind and hurt by what we don’t often initially recognize before it stabs us yet again.

No, the ones I’m speaking to are the ones who are having a hard time accepting that these things keep happening, and that they always happen when you find something to find comfort in. I wanna apologize to you. I know that we care, and I know that we always tend to have better expectations, hoping time and time again that things will be better. That these people won’t be cruel to us anymore, that we’ll finally be able to like and be a part of something that finally won’t raise its racist hand up at us, cursing us for things about ourselves that we cannot change.

Like I said before, I’m not going to tell you how to react or act. But I will ask that you look inside and at yourself and the people that look like you, who are angry for you and themselves and ask why you aren’t angry too. Why aren’t you? Why does the hand that continues to assault us with their harmful words, ideas, actions and more not make you move? Why does it not cause you to stir, to react in defense of yourself, to be rightfully upset that you have to tiptoe around your interests because people both in and outside of those interests believe you undeserving of a shred of humanity, enjoyment, representation, and life?

Why do you not act? Where is your honor? Where is your self-respect?

So no, again, I won’t tell what to be nor how to feel. But I ask that you look deep within yourself and then look outside of yourself. Look at your fellows and look at their pain when you feel numb or absent of it… and decide. Make a decision. I ask that you consider yourself personally, how these people’s flippant actions, their hurtful words, their scarring actions, how they have yet to cause you to move forward and away from them. We deserve to be properly represented—with us in mind. We deserve to not be afterthoughts in the presence of whiteness. We deserve to be here, to be intertwined with one another, to enjoy and to be enjoyed for who we are. So when you come across a piece of media that asks you to lower your respect for yourself to enjoy it, when they ask that you turn your brain off to mindlessly enjoy what they inject in your veins via their words and intentions without using your brain, your heart, and your mind to assess this things worth in your life… I hope that you choose yourself and that you choose your people.

Because at the end of the day, we can create the art that we seek to see and trust that we won’t betray ourselves. But them? They can’t be trusted, whiteness can NEVER be trusted. As a collective, they have never cared about us. It’s shown in their books, their songs and sonnets, their stories, their words, their actions, their everything. Whiteness has never served us and its mighty time that we choose ourselves this time. We need not continue to hurt ourselves on the swords crafted to maim us.

We deserve better. We’ve always deserved better.

i know you mentioned it s few times but would you be willing to expand more on the misogyny within TADC now that the leaks are out?

there’s already so much wrong with how jax is essentially allowed to mistreat them and they can only placate him until the end. Even in ep8 theyre acknowledging how they’re all they have and should stick together…. with the guy who has shown no interest in changing.

for the entirety of the show i just kept batting around the horrible idea of being stuck in a small no escape area with, sure maybe primarily other women but one unstable abusive guy. It would be a complete fucking horrorshow! and for the show to essentially have this situation and be an “adult” tv show, but only go the route of “wow, shitty abusive men just need time and care” instead of like,,, playing with the concept of how terrifying it could be to be trapped for eternity with essentially anyone, just feels v disappointing.

i just feel like the show is heavily suggesting that these types of people should still be given effort and second chances over and over again and like. Did we need that?

Well to be blunt, the show is drenched in misogyny alright?

The characters who get the most development and also drive the plot of the show, are all male; Kinger, Caine, and Jax (four if you count Scratch being the reason why all this happened) oh and they’re all abusers. Yeah let’s talk about that.

So we know Jax is an obvious case. He’s violent, aggressive, talks down on the women around him (these comments get even more direct in the final episode btw), and has canonically committed various forms of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse towards all the women and fem individuals around him. There is one scene that I haven’t seen many talk about too in depth but it has to do with Ribbit. Spoilers but in the final episode we find out he was the reason she abstracted. He isolated her from everyone else, turned Kaufmo against her, and neglected her. It’s tragic. BUT, what I haven’t seen anyone talk about really is that the scene between them when he reveals to her what happened in his waking life (he thinks he killed his mom because he pushed her after they were fighting, a NON VIOLENT FIGHT mind you and she hugged him towards the end of it) is,,,,lowkey kinda strange. I want you to think about the framing of two people alone in a room together, having an intimate moment. They finally have that intimate moment and the lady in question thanks them for their vulnerability and promises trust,,,,,and then immediately after that the man ignores her, curbs her, gaslights her into saying nothing’s wrong, until she’s a shell of a woman begging for “what they once had”. Like. Ew.

So Jax is an abuser but Caine is also one too because he’s established as someone with an insane power dynamic over them, being able to literally manipulate every aspect of them, but it’s fine right? Cus all he wants is just love and affection which should be easy to give and totally not spurred on by their desperation to survive. Yeah, it’s giving Blitzo and Stolas I’m ngl.

And then lastly we have Kinger who; slips under the radar but is honestly pretty damn bad. He’s the enabler of the bunch. The one who started the mess they’re in and then completely fucked off into his pillow fort, not stepping in at all when the former two were terrorizing everyone around him.

And in all these examples of abusers, the fates they get are so unrealistic and so “fuck you” to their victims that it just gets more insulting.

Caine, the one who had power over them and abused it just…gives them that power back.

Kinger, the one who sat around and did nothing…suddenly knows everything of what to do.

And Jax, the worst offender of all…just dies. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gooseworx thought Bojack Horseman should have died too, rather than ya know…being forced to be held accountable for his actions and watch all the people he hurt live successful lives without him interfering.

But in the misogyny show, that just won’t cut it now will it?

Every female character is related to a man. Either they help them but not really, or they’re a victim to a man. We don’t know shit about them, and we probably never will. They do not tell us at all how Zooble got their headset on btw, and no Ragatha did not get any more development.

This is something really small in the whole picture but what was the point of that scene in episode six when jax says the people closing to abstracting weren't pleasant to be around? Now that we saw how things went to ribbit and kaufmo its very clear that jax was the one making everything difficult for them while he acted like he was the victim like. Me when I'm in the "making everything about me" and my opponent is jax

On the one hand, it could very well be another part of Jax’s selfish mannerisms…but I also wouldn’t be surprised if this was just something they had him say that AGAIN wouldn’t be followed up on. It could be either or at this point and they’re both annoying possibilities. 😪

Two things:

Firstly, I think it would be so cool if you had a side blog for your critiques (not just TADC, but other shows in general)! It would help separate the types of asks you get and keep things organized around here.

Secondly, about your recent Queenie post, it's entirely possible that Kinger wasn't able to be the supportive partner she needed. He failed her. In his big third episode, Kinger says, "In this world, the worst thing you can do is...make someone think they're not wanted or loved." And in Queenie's one scene, Kinger begins to say, "Listen, no matter what happens, I'll always--"

He'll always be there for her? He'll always love her? It hard cuts to Queenie's abstraction, so maybe it was a mix of both and was meant to show he failed to live up to whatever promise he made to her.

I wish we had more hints about how that happened, because TADC goes out of its way to show us that Kinger takes good care of his family. He's said to be a great dad to two daughters, who Pomni and Ragatha represent, and he is happily married to Queenie in real life.

That sideblog may be a worthy investment..! There’s quite a few shows and media I could critique!

But anyways! Considering that Queenie x Kinger is (allegedly) the only ship of the show, it’s pretty crazy that we hardly see anything of their relationship. He doesn’t talk much about her and it’s always in passing, like the only part of their relationship worth mentioning is the brief life they had together in the circus rather than their time in the real world.

Honestly, seeing a smart and capable black woman be entrapped by a white man and ultimately end up as a hollowed out vaguely sentient version of herself is incredibly upsetting. Their real lives don’t matter because we barely see it! That’s not the focus of the show! It’s just something they threw in at the last minute in an attempt for a happy ending.
