I'm a journalist in Northern Saskatchewan sometimes I cover bake sales, sometimes I cover disasters at god-awful hours.
So I was hanging out, drinking some wine after a full day of bathroom renovations when I get an anonymous text.
You can see how my texts go from Saturday-night skepticism, to reporter curiosity, to me already running out the door before I get anouther response.
So I put down my wine, grabbed all my shit and drove with reckless abandon while breaking distracted driving laws to google the address.
I'm on my way when my phone rings. My editor is on the scene and photos aren't good enough. He wants me to get audio and video equipment to add to the camera I'm bringing.
OK. This is what I do I guess.
So I make a quick right turn, head to the office. Run upstairs (all the running I've been doing comes in handy at times like this) grab a shoulder video camera, my DSLR, a professional audio recorder, microphone, cables, batteries, everything. There's no time for bags I just grab it and once more speed to the scene.
I get carrying all that crap and just start shooting. I eventually find my editor and he interviews the deputy chief while I tape.
Then I go and shoot. We weren't supposed to go past the yellow tape but I always exploit my position and creep closer until someone yells at me. Depending on how high up that person looks, I'll either comply or lie and say someone else said it's OK.
Anyway, it all worked out. We shot the video and put up on our news website in just over an hour, photos, story, audio (on the radio) and video.
Sometimes, I love my job.
So, Here's some
ADVICE ON HOW TO REPORT IN AN EMERGENCY
1. Hurry the fuck up. Don't wait for the details, just start getting there. If you live in a big enough market, you should be trying to be the first person out of all your competition on the scene.
2. Get all the shit you need to do a good job. There's no point in getting there first, or even last if you've got nothing on you. Be ready to shoot, talk, run, and make it back in time to do something useful.
3. Have everything prepared, always. Thankfully, my video camera battery was charged, but my DSLR was not. I got off a few shots before she died and none were good enough to use. I had to resort to stills from video, which at night time, are only acceptable because there was nothing else.
Also! I took the strap off my DSLR so entire time I was juggling things like an idiot.
4. Be seen. If you're going out and people are watching, role up in style. If you've got a marked vehicle park somewhere conspicious. Make sure people see you breaking rules to get good shots.
It sounds kind of shallow, but journalism is a constant battle to be relevant and trustworthy. People like knowing you're trying.
I think that's good for now.
And now I'm going to go back to that glass of wine.
Oh and here's the video.
