The recording was made by one of the Budongo field researchers. The sound was used to create a sound-form that was auctioned off to raise funds for the Budongo Snare Removal Project. Zefa, during the time of the recording, was a high ranking male. Drumming on buttress trees is a common behaviour in male chimpanzees, and usually they do that when pant-hooting. The meaning/function of these drums is not well known. They might do that to make the signal (the pant hoot) more effective in communicating with other parties. Alternatively, drumming is a display which function is to 'impress' the other males, and therefore to maintain or improve his social status.

Amongst the many sounds chimps make, the “pant hoot” is a distinct, individual call that helps others identify who is communicating.
