Am I the only one who was annoyed that they made Daphne the diamond of the first water? Like, the whole point was she was supposed to be relatable and the fake relationship with Simon was because people didn't see her as a viable candidate; to throw Anthony under the bus like "it's because her brother is mean!" just seemed like a weird choice. And I know it was a very slight plotpoint in the book but it was such a little one? It's like they couldn't have a main girl who wasn't the most beautiful
(2/2) I ran out of space but basically it just felt like a weird tv thing where no one could conceive of having the main girl not be the most beautiful, most coveted and so they had to invent the Anthony thing as an alternative reason that men aren't courting her
You are far from the only one. I don’t know why they felt the need to change it and because they changed it, it then left open some gaping plotholes -. It doesn’t really make any sense that Daphne is the Diamond one night and then Marina shows up and suddenly Daphne’s forgotten about. Daphne is a Bridgerton, the daughter of a wealthy and powerful family. Marina is the daughter of some nobody from the country whose only connection to the Ton is through the Featheringtons, a family nobody likes or respects. So nobody but Nigel thought that Daphne was worth pursuing even though she’s incredibly beautiful, accomplished, well connected and has a large dowry? Right.
I preferred Daphne’s canon story - Her desperation to find a husband, to engage in a dumb ruse with Simon, it all makes more sense when she’s been on the scene for a couple of years and feels the chance to marry slipping away. And it wouldn’t have been necessary to throw Anthony’s canon characterisation out the window to necessitate the drama.
