Omg so awhile ago I was driving with my dad while visiting his house and he was trying to tell me about the farm his parents had started since they retired and he said “they have many animals, like... uh... these... they have paons.”

And obviously I didn’t know what that was, so I asked him, and he said, “You know, the, uh... the birds, with the plummage, and they’re very pretty. A paon.”

And I thought for a moment, then said, “...Peacocks?”

He was confused, so he asked what that was and I explained it to him.

And that’s how I found out that even though my dad has spent 18+ years in the US, in a state that has WILD PEACOCKS, no one ever taught him the English word for peacock
