Why does everybody hate this movie exactly? Is it just the cool thing to do? Legit question.
I mean, there are a billion thinkpieces about why Ready Player One isn’t a particularly good story that you could find with, like, a google search.
The short version is that it’s based on a book that’s a cliche and kind of mediocre adventure story in a poorly developed dystopia with shallow characters and a loosely developed theme that it ends up contradicting over and over again. Despite all these problems, which aren’t necessarily damning flaws, it developed a pretty passionate fandom and even some critical praise because of its absolutely enormous amount of references to pop culture, ranging from mainstream to insanely obscure. Eventually it got enough prestige that freakin’ Steven Spielberg made a film adaptation of it, which is bizarre and maybe a little insulting considering all of the similar works of fiction that are, like, undeniably better and more creative than it.
Basically it’s like if someone tried to turn Trivial Pursuit into a movie and somehow managed to get Steven Spielberg to direct it with an INSANE budget, and the end result was a movie that’s, like, just ok despite having literally hundreds of the most beloved characters in all of fiction. It’s kind of baffling that this exists and that so much money was poured into it when at the end of the day it’s just kind of... meh.
