I thought I was in big trouble- it seemed too good to be true, that they'd be taking me in. I thought they just wanted to use me, like everyone else, but I was wrong.

We aren’t good people, Arthur. But we’re not entirely bad folks either. Now, I’m not particularly the religious type myself but you know what I do believe in?

I believe that every man and woman deserves a second chance. I ain’t perfect. Never claimed to be. With the amount of horrible sins that I did when I was a much younger man has definitely made sure that I will never be reunited with my beloved Bessie again, but I have tried so very hard to do good to at least balance out what horrors I committed.

You’ll be okay, son. Just try to remember to do good.

When Arthur was a kid how was he like? Aggressive, sweet, mean?

Shy, to begin with. Shy but god, he knew how to run his mouth. Swore like a sailor, that boy did. He was a combination of a lot of things, actually. I’ll always remember when he bought a stray puppy back to camp and begged me and Dutch to keep it with genuine tears in his eyes.
