That’s a REALLY good question, and unfortunately tough to answer. To quote this awesome post on the monetary system of early 19C France by Ten Little Bullets:

Conversion to modern currency:

Basically, don’t even try it. The relative prices of various commodities were all different in the early 19th century: rent and services were cheap, food and durable goods like clothing were expensive. It’s nearly impossible to construct any kind of meaningful exchange rate. The closest I’ll come is to say that you can get an extremely rough estimate by considering an early 19th century franc to be worth somewhere between 10 and 20 modern British pounds.

 In terms of actual purchasing power, though, a franc was in the realm of $20 or so. Establishing exchange rates between historical and modern currency is a nightmare because the relative prices of everything have shifted so much (rent and labor were cheaper, material goods like food and clothing more expensive), but $20 is a nice round number that gives you $1 as the value of a sou and $.20 as the value of a centime, and tends to give you more-or-less sane-sounding prices for things. 

 So: $1 for a loaf of bread, $6 for a mutton chop, $40/hour for a taxi, Feuilly as a skilled artisan makes $60 a day ($5 to $7.50 an hour depending on the length of his workday), Fantine gets $400 for each of her front teeth, Marius’ annual(!) rent for his crappy room is about $600 and his annual earnings are about $14,000, Myriel’s annual stipend as bishop of Digne is a whopping $300,000 and he and Baptistine and Magloire live on $30,000 after giving the rest to charity. If anything, it’s an underestimate, but “a sou is $1 and a franc is $20” is the most convenient way to eyeball prices in the book.

Marius marries Courfeyrac for in-state tuition rates. Drama ensues.

(Said drama involves Courfeyrac trying to woo Cosette for Marius while technically being married to him, Marius being deeply confused over growing feelings for Courfeyrac while also being madly in love with Cosette, and Cosette being quite perplexed by the whole thing. Many feelings are had all around.)

(I might have not understood everything but) Could modern day Enjolras "represent" a modern movement then if canon era Enjolras was French Revolution, or would that destroy crucial charater traits of his?

That’s a good question!  I don’t think it has A Single Right Answer ; I’ve seen strong arguments either way.

I think the Revolution isn’t quiet Relevant in the same way today (in 1832, people who lived through the Revolution itself were still alive and involved in politics!  And its ideals and the debate over it were a major issue in the French politics of the time.) My own vote is that any Modern!Enjolras is going to be an expert in the ideals and history of whatever movement they’re devoted to, which  will ...probably  not lean heavily on the French Revolution. 

That said: The French Revolution is  still a generally relevant thing to study for anyone into politics (and leftist/ish politics in particular ) to study, because it was  a really big deal and had effects in politics for .... Still Going On.  So I’d expect any modern Enjolras to have a pretty informed understanding of it, if they’re not like...14, and maybe even then.  But probably they won’t be the Very Embodiment Of That Specific Great Event, but of another equally relevant to whatever Cause they’re representing.

Marius/Grantaire?

Not a serious ship in any way, not even in the way Grantaire/Jehan is, but I love them interacting. It’s so much fun. They can both be Quite Dreadful, but at the end of the day I can see real grudging fondness and enjoyment in bothering each other.

Enjolras

In all honesty when I first read the brick I didn’t like him - but then I got into crime fiction and Discworld, and grew a Taste for the kind of character he is.

I developped a Type and upon re-reading the book I found he fit it very well. What type, you ask? Well, the calculating, ruthless, scary-smart, competent type, who is Good but Not Soft, and will do everything to achieve his goals.

Enjolras is the Light of the Revolution Personified, yes - but he’s also Sherlock Holmes if he got into politics. The Logic of Revolution.

And Les Amis are his collective Watson.
